The Situation of His Majestys Ship Ambuscade, off the Island of Jersey, the 15th of November 1779. To the Inhabitants of the said Island This Plate is most humbly Dedicated by their obedient humble Servant W. Adlam Capt.n of Marines.

Very scarce mezzotint. 445 x 550mm (17½ x 21½"). Trimmed to image on three sides, margins rebuilt, tears repaired.
HMS Ambuscade in treacherous conditions off the island of Jersey. Launched in 1773, the ship was in service in the American Revolution and French Revolutionary Wars (including nearly five years as a French ship). She was broken up in 1810. William Adlam (1750-1823) served in the American War of Independence as a Captain in the 40th Regiment (the 2nd Somersetshire) of Foot. He then served with Nelson at the battles of Copenhagen, Ushant and Nile, and was aboard the Victory at Trafalgar. A keen artist, he drew and engraved a portrait of Voltaire in 1780 as well as naval scenes such as this.
