Le Sort des Artistes. No XXVII
Le Sort des Artistes. No XXVII
[after Nicolai Abildgaard.]
[Paris n.d., c.1800.]
Coloured etching. Sheet 160 x 220mm (6¼ x 8¾"). Trimmed within plate, folds, laid on album paper.
''The Fate of Artists." An artist sits with his fingers in his ears trying to block out the chatter of the ignorant public and self-appointed critics (some with the heads of donkeys and sheep, as well as a goose and turkey) as the Roman goddess Minerva looks on. A French adaptation of Nicolai Abildgaard’s 1786 satire ("Kunstnerens Lod"). The plate marker 'No. XXVII' reflects the early 19th-century Parisian market's taste for serialized graphic satire, where publishers repackaged British and continental caricatures into numbered sets.
