Draughts. The amusing game of Draughts on holdoing up the print to the light is transformed into another agreeable pastime.

Transformation print: a scene of two men playing draughts which, when held up to the light, turns into a drinking scene. This is due to the application of certain pigments in the colouring, which may still be activated. The Chinese Bridge on Fire, on the night of the celebration of the glorious Peace of 1814.

Coloured mezzotint, prepared as a transparency. 180 x 125mm (7 x 5"), Narrow margins, some staining.
On 1st August 1814 a series of events celebrating both the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the centenary of Hanoverian rule in England. In St James's Park a Chinese bridge with a pagoda was built over the lake; in Green Park a revolving Temple of Concord was constructed by Sir William Congreve (of rocket fame); and in Hyde Park naval battles with miniature frigates were fought (the 'Nile' and 'Trafalgar' against the French and a third against the Americans, a reminder that Britain was still fighting the War of 1812). The battles were successful events: however the pagoda in St James's Park was set alight by fireworks, killing one and injuring another; and the balloon ascent, by James Sadler (1753-1828, the first English balloonist) did not go as planned and he had to make an emergency landing. This print has been treated with oil and colour on the reverse to create more vivid colours when held up to a light.

A transparency, with the image of towers, trees, bridge and figures made up of darker paper, so the sky and waterfall are lit up. The reverse has scorch marks, suggesting someone held this item too close to a fire, possibly causing the moon tissue to crack.

Probably illustrates Lord Nelson's famous victory at the Battle of the Nile or Aboukir Bay (August 1-2, 1798), the French ship l'Orient exploding background left. Sailors are rescued from floating wreckage in the foreground.

Netley abbey, the late medieval monastery in the village of Netley, Hampshire. It was founded in 1239 by monks of the austere Cistercian roder by was closed in 1539 by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Transparency with tourists viewing by day, which, when viewed by candlelight, transforms into a night time scene with gypsies sat around a fire.

An untreated optical print, showing a figure charming snakes, with a cityscape behind. The colour of the print should transform when held in front of light.

Smuglers, hideing a Cargo.

Aquatint. Plate 266 x 203mm. 10½ x 8". Tear in lower edge.
Smugglers unloading barrels and hiding them in the cellars of the abbey. Uncoloured aquatint with the moon shining through the arch of the ruined abbey. Fores transparencies were popular amusements in the late 18th and early 19th century. S.W. Fores was son of a cloth merchant. Founded his business as a print seller in 1783, specialising in caricatures.
