The character of the animal and its lugubrious expression is expertly captured. Sir Edwin Landseer (1802 - 1873) was the most famous animal painter of the period. He was trained by his father to sketch animals from life, and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy when only 13. Emotive portraits of animals went down very well with the Victorian public, crossing the class divide. Queen Victoria had Landseer paint her pets, while the middle classes bought prints of his work to hang at home.

The original painting was exhibited at the British Institution in 1865 and now hangs at Osborne House, the Royal Residence on the Isle of Wight.
