The Madonna, the Infant Christ and St. John,
The Madonna, the Infant Christ and St. John, From an unfinished Basso relievo in Marble by Michelangelo Buonaroti. Done by him about the Year 1503 for Taddeo Taddei [...]
Michael Angelo [...] F. Bartolozzi R.A.
London Pub.d as the Act directs Jan. 1 1795 by A. Molteno Printseller to her Royal Highness the Duchess of York No. 76 St. James's Street
Soft-ground etching, rare, platemark 355 x 300mm (14 x 11¾"), with very large margins. Creases top right in margin.
Etching of Michelangelo's Taddei Tondo, which since 1830 was been in the collection of the Royal Academy of Arts, London. The text below the image claims that the print was made by the celebrated Italian printmaker (and founding member of the Royal Academy) Francesco Bartolozzi and published in 1795, but this cannot be true, as the tondo was not acquired by George Beaumont until 1822. After Beaumont died in 1827, the print was briefly in possession of Lady Beaumont (who is named as the owner of the tondo on this print) before it waas received by the RA in 1830. During this time an etching of the tondo after a drawing by William Young Ottley was made by F.C. Lewis and published in London by W.B. Tiffin in 1828. This print would appear to be an altered impression of that plate, with the publisher (potentially Molteno, who was active until 1845) backdating the print and attributing the print to Bartolozzi, dead by this time but one of the foremost eighteenth century engravers, in a bid to increase demand for the print. In a recent book about the tondo, Alison Cole described the source drawing by Ottley as follows: 'the drawing sensitively attempts to amend the 'unfinished' nature of the tondo, in much the same way as plaster casts of the period tend to do, focusing on making sense of the shadowy figure of St John and the 'dove' and further delineating the exquisite features of the Virgin. Ottley probably drew the tondo soon after the purchase was made [by George Beaumont] (c.1822)'.

The injured Tancred supported by Vafrin, while Erminia, kneeling on the ground, holds his hand. Scene from 'Jerusalem Delivered' by Torquato Tasso (1544 - 1595).Stipple by Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815) after his frequent collaborator Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727-85). Bartolozzi was born in Florence but migrated to England, and in 1768 was elected as a founding member of the Royal Academy in London (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal. This impression from the collection of Dr. Augusto Calabi of Milan, art historian who co-authored (with A.B. de Vesme) the authoritative catalogue raisonné of Bartolozzi's work.

To The King.
To The King. I Humbly beg leave to lay at Your Majesty's feet the folllowing Dissertation.... May it please Your Majesty, Your Majesty's dutiful servant and faithful subject, William Chambers.
[n.d., 1772.]
Titlepage, engraved dedication with stipple engraved and etched vignette, 235 x 175mm. 9¼ x 7".
From 'A Dissertation on Oriental Gardening', W. Griffin, London, 1772. The book represented an unfortunate literary venture by the architect Sir William Chambers (1726 - 1796), in which he endeavoured to prove the superiority of the Chinese system of landscape gardening over that practised in Europe. His preface is animated with irritation against Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, whose design for Lord Clive's villa at Claremont had been preferred to his. The ‘Dissertation’ itself, with its absurd depreciation of nature, its bombastic style, and its ridiculous descriptions (mainly borrowed from other works) of the gardens of the emperor of China, was sufficient to account for the satires which it called into life. The most important of these was ‘An Heroic Epistle to Sir W. C.,’ followed by ‘An Heroic Postscript’ to this epistle, in both of which the satire was keen and the verses pointed. These lively pieces were published anonymously, and their authorship was for some time a matter for conjecture. There is now no doubt that they were by William Mason, the poet, the first book of whose ‘English Garden’ was published in 1772. Chambers commenced to exhibit with the Society of Artists (in Spring Gardens) in 1761, and was one of the first members and the first treasurer of the Royal Academy when established in 1768. In 1775 he was appointed architect of Somerset House at a salary of 2,000l. a year. With image above of two sides of a coin depicting George III as a Roman emperor and the facade of the Royal Academy. After Cipriani, engraved by Bartolozzi.

A rare stipple. 192 x 140mm. 7½ x 5½".
Francisco Vieira de Matos (1765-1805), who choose the artistic name of Vieira Portuense, was a Portuguese painter, one of the introducers of Neoclassicism in Portuguese painting. He was, in the neoclassical style, one of the two great Portuguese painters of his generation, with Domingos Sequeira. He first studied in Lisbon, later moving to Rome. He travelled through Italy, Germany, Austria and England, before returning to Portugal, in 1800. He met Swiss painter Angelika Kauffmann, from who he seems to have received influences. He seems to anticipate some motives of the romantic painting, in several of his historical paintings. He contracted tuberculosis, and moved to Madeira, were he died, aged only 39.

J.F. Rigaud R.A. Pinx.t F. Bartolozzi R.A. Sculp.t
London Publish'd Feb.y 14. 1788 by W. Palmer, No.163 Strand.
Stipple printed in red, proof before title. Plate 336 x 406mm. 13¼ x 16".
Vortigern was the Saxon King of Britain in 5 AD. He forged an alliance with brothers, Hengist and Horsa, who were given lands in Lincolshire in return for help in suppressing the Picts. The alliance was further enforced when King Vortigern fell in love with Renwein (or Rowena), the beautiful daughter of Hengist who agreed to their marriage in exchange for the whole of Kent. The scene captured here is clearly the banquet scene depicting the meeting of Vortigern and Rowena. The helmeted brooding figure of Hengist is seen seated on the left. Sometime later, in an attempt to bring all of Britain under Saxon control Vortigern arranged a meeting with Hengist, then King of the Jutes. However, Hengist armed his men who then massacred some 500 Saxon noblemen in an attack which became known as ‘the night of the long knives'
