Published by J. Anderson, Nov.r 13th. 1793.

William Aikman (1682-1731), was a portrait painter who studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He took up a career as an artist and, by 1703, was painting portraits professionally in Edinburgh. He sold his family estate near Arbroath to enable him to travel unfettered to Europe to complete his artistic training. Aikman spent three years in Rome, before visiting Turkey and then spent a further period in Rome. He returned to Scotland in 1712, where he made the acquaintance of the poet Allan Ramsay and found an enthusiastic patron in John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, who persuaded Aikman to move to London. He established a distinguished portrait practice in London, portraying royalty and many members of the aristocracy.

Lithograph. Image 200 x 153mm. 7¾ x 6". Sheet 373 x 259mm. 14¾ x 10¼".
William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882), Novelist. Ainsworth was an author of popular historical romances. He initially studied law but left it for literature, publishing his first novel anonymously in 1826. His first success came with Rookwood (1834), featuring the highwayman Dick Turpin, which led many reviewers to hail him as the successor to Sir Walter Scott. Jack Sheppard (1839), the story of an eighteenth-century burgular, was equally successful, but its supposed glamorisation of crime proved controversial. From then on Ainsworth switched to historical novels based on places rather than criminals, including The Tower of London (1840),Old St. Paul's, A Tale of the Plague and the Fire (1841), and The Lancashire Witches (1849).

Plan of the Aintree Race Ground, near Liverpool. Shewing the various Courses. 1842.
Drawn & Engraved by G. Tattersall.
London. Published March 1st 1842 by R. Ackermann, 191 Regent Street.
Rare etching, platemark 160 x 250mm (6¼ x 9¾").
Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool. The hotelier and sports promoter William Lynn (1792-1870), who had leased the Waterloo Hotel in Aintree in 1820, leased the racecourse in 1829 (probably as a way of attracting customers to his hotel), erected a grandstand, and was soon organizing three meetings a year. By the time this print was published, however, the artistocracy had become involved. Lynn's name had been removed from the card (he was declared bankrupt in 1844), and the 'Grand National' (which some consider to have begun in the 1830s) was officially adopted in 1847 for the national racing event at the course.

James or John Aitkin (1752-77), a Scot better known as John the Painter, shown in the dock during his trial for arson attacks on British dockyards during the American War of Independence. A painter by trade, his knowledge of chemicals paint solvents enabled him to make crude incendiary devices. After attacking Portsmouth and Bristol Dockyards, causing a general panic of a large band of arsonists, he was captured, tried and hung at Portsmouth on 10th March 1777. The mizzenmast of HMS Arethusa was taken from the ship and erected at the dockyard entrance, so that the reported 20,000 spectators could all get a good view. A Russian Dandy a scene at Aix la Chapelle. Tis said that the Head of the Forces allied, Not having a Coat to his Back, A generous Monarch the needful supplied, And when thus equip'd they sat down side by side, To drink their Champaign & theire Sack, Now doubtless this Hero of wonderful note, Had the Monarch allowed him to choose, Would have barter'd his honor to sit in his Coat, For the Pleasure to stand in his Shoes.
Pub Dec 8th 1818 by S W Fores 50 Piccadilli & Oxford Street.
Hand coloured etching, 340 x 240mm (13¼ x 9½"), with large margins. Laid on paper. Mount burn. Time staining. Small crease in top margin. Taped tear bottom margin.
Scarce and good satire image showing the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle, held in the autumn of 1818. It (incorrectly) suggests that the Tsar imposes his policy on Wellington, who attended the Conference as Commander-in-Chief of the allied forces, Castlereagh being the British plenipotentiary. Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) stands left wearing a uniform and cocked hat with field-marshal's plume. He faces talking to Alexander I, Tsar of Russia (1777-1825). They both wear giant boots that reach the hips, and being wrinkled at the ankles suggest the trousers of the dandies. Wellington: "One may be allowed a Variety of Mistresses; but I have such a Variety of Masters, I shall not know which to serve first!!!" Alexander: "I think you will be a little Straiten'd in it." One of the Russians: "Our Master has put him in a strait coat now; it will be well if he does not get a Strait Waistcoat by & by."

Native of Unalaska, Alaska in canoes, from a French edition of James Cook's Third Voyage. Captain James Cook, explorer, cartographer and hydrographer went to command several notable voyages, the first was from 1768-1771. He was led to his commission by the direction of British overseas exploration in 1766 as commander of HM Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages. Cook's journals were published upon his return, and he became something of a hero among the scientific community. Cook's 12 years sailing around the Pacific Ocean contributed much to European knowledge of the area.

Some of La Perouse's crew in trouble in the icy waters of Lituya Bay, Alaska (now part of the Glacier Bay Park & Wilderness), after the capsizing of two cutters, resulting in twenty-one deaths. In normal circumstances the waters are incredibly dangerous, with the spill of three glaciers entering the bay and a tidal difference of 10 feet; but in 1958 a megatsunami was recorded in the bay that destroyed trees to a height of 1,720 feet above sea-level, signifying a wave higher than the Empire State Building. In 1785 Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1741-88) was sent by the French to continue Cook's exploration work in the Pacific, in the ships 'Astrolabe' & 'Boussole'. After three years, during which time he visited Chile, California, Alaska, Kamchatka, the Philippines, Japan and Hawaii, he travelled to Australia. Outside Botany Bay he met up with Captain Arthur Phillip's First Fleet, after which he set sail and was never seen again, despite an extensive rescue mission. Fortunately La Pérouse took every oportunity to send his work back to France: one crew member disembarked here at Petropavlovsk and spent a year crossing Russia back to France; later journals, charts and letters he left with the British at Botany Bay. Thus his discoveries were not lost with him, but published posthumously in this work, 'Voyage de la Perouse autour du monde..'.
