Two characters from Tasso's 'Jerusalem Delivered'. Torquato Tasso (1544 - 1595) was an Italian poet. He was author of 'Aminta', 'Rinaldo and Armida' published in 1562, and 'Gerusalemme Liberata', finished in 1575. It concerns the First Crusade to the Holy Land (1096-9) and the Crusaders siege of Jerusalem under the leadership of Godfrey of Boulogne. His models for this heroic epic were Homer and Virgil's Aeneid. Tasso portrayed both imaginary characters and real historical persons, among them the heroes Rinaldo and Tancredi, and their Saracen ladies Armida and Clorinda.

G.B. Cipriani inv. F. Bartolozzi sculp. London 1780
Etching and engraving, rare; platemark 330 x 240mm (13 x 9½"). Good impression; glued to backing sheet at corners.
Proof impression of the frontispiece to the first volume of 'Geminarum antiquarum delectus...', a publication detailing highlights from the collection of gems assembled by the fourth Duke of Marlborough, George Spencer (1739-1817) at Blenheim Palace. The book, in two volumes, was initially printed in an edition of one hundred copies for private distribution before being republished in 1845. Etching by Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815) after his frequent collaborator Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727-85). Bartolozzi was born in Florence but migrated to England, and in 1768 was elected as a founding member of the Royal Academy in London (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal. This impression from the collection of Dr. Augusto Calabi of Milan, art historian who co-authored (with A.B. de Vesme) the authoritative catalogue raisonné of Bartolozzi's work.

Lucy of Leinster.
Lucy of Leinster. Of Leinster, fam'd for maidens fair ... Her life now near its end. Vide Colin & Lucy [three verses of four lines each below title].
Henry Bunbury Esq. delt. F. Bartolozzi R.A. sculpt.
London. Publish'd May 10. 1799, by Thos. Macklin, Poets Gallery, Fleet Street.
Etching and stipple in sepia, 435 x 510mm. 17 x 20". Some light foxing. Uncut sheet.
A young woman supported by three others, helping her to a stool in front of a cottage under a vine trellis. An old woman sits with an open book looking at Lucy with concern, a little boy holding a basket of flowers and a dog. After Bunbury, this illustrates poet and statesman Thomas Tickell's (1685 - 1740) 'Lucy and Colin', in which Colin abandoned Lucy for a wealthier bride. Lucy died on her lover's wedding day and, pursuant to her request, was brought to the church. Upon seeing his true love's body, Colin succumbed to death as well, and the lovers were buried in the same tomb. Published by Thomas Macklin (c.1760 - 1800) for his series of 'British Poets', begun in 1787.
