[Dogs and cats in a yard.]
[Richard Gaywood.]
[British, n.d., c.1680.]
Etching, 140 x 210mm. 5½ x 8¼".
A greyhound and spaniel looking up at two squirrels in a tree upper right; two cats lower right, a mastiff chained to a thatched building at left, and a forth dog sitting at centre of composition. From a series of plates showing groups of animals, numbered '10' lower right. The composition derives from Francis Barlow's drawing of three dogs and two cats, which was etched in reverse by Gaywood for 'Variae quadrupedum species'. Gaywood modified this design, including another dog at bottom centre and another cat at lower right, and has removed one of the original cats and added the tree with squirrels in the background. This appears to be a reissue of his plate, with the number and a 'Y' added (upper right).

[Jack Russell] Excelsior!
Painted by W.m Strutt. Etched by A.W. Strutt.
London, Published Nov.r 1st 1887 by I.P. Mendoza, St James's Gallery, King St, St James's _ Copyright registered.
Etching. 525 x 345mm (20¾ x 13½"), with very large margins.
One Jack Russell terrier puppy wins the race up three steps. William Strutt (1825-1915), son of William Thomas Strutt, travelled to Australia and tried his hand in the Ballarat gold fields. Failing to make his fortune he returned to painting. He travelled to New Zealand 1855-6, and recorded the preparations of the Burke and Wills exploration expedition in 1860-61. He left Australia in 1862, not wanting to bring his children up in such a godless society. Back in England he turned his sketches into full paintings: in 2015 his ''View of Mt Egmont from New Plymouth, with Maori driving off settlers' cattle'' was purchased by the Museum of New Zealand for NZ$1.5 million, becoming the only significant oil painting from the 1850s or 1860s in their collection. The engraver of this plate, Alfred William Strutt, was his son, born in Taranaki, New Zealand in 1856.

Maud Earl.
Copyright 1906. Published by the Berlin Photographic Company Berlin - London W. 133 New Bond Street.
Colour photogravure, ltd edition of 100, signed by the Artist. 220 x 350mm.
Wire-haired Fox Terriers. Maud Alice Earl (1864-1943) was an eminent British-American canine painter. Her works are much enjoyed by dog enthusiasts and also accurately record many breeds. Earl was the born in London, the daughter of artist George Earl and his first wife Alice Beaumont Rawlins. Maud's profession was the continuation of a family tradition. George Earl, an avid sportsman and noted sporting painter, was his daughter's first teacher and had his daughter study the anatomy of her subjects, drawing dog, horse and human skeletons to improve her skill. She later said that her father's instruction had given her ability that set her apart from other dog painters. After her father's tutelage Maud went on to study at Royal Female School of Art (later incorporated into the Central School of Art). Earl became famous during the Victorian Era, a time when women were not expected to make their living at painting. Nevertheless, she developed a select clientele, including Royals amongst her patrons such as Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra. Although evidently extremely successful in England, Earl felt that the world she knew had been destroyed by World War I and she emigrated to New York City in 1916. By this time her work had received wide international recognition and her popular images were published in a number of books and in print form. The Sportsman's Year featured twelve of Earl's works as engravings. Maud Earl died in New York in 1943 and is buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York.

Fine portrait of a fox terrier in a landscape.
