In the mid-1840s he hunted in South Africa, mainly in Bechuanaland and the valley of the Limpopo River, before returning to Britain where he published 'Five Years of a Hunter's Life in the Far Interior of South Africa', 1850. Although many readers reacted with incredulity, David Livingstone, who furnished Gordon-Cumming with most of his native guides, wrote: 'I have no hesitation in saying that Mr. Cumming's book conveys a truthful idea of South African hunting' (Missionary Travels, chap. vii.).

Neil Gow,
Neil Gow, The Famous Musician of Scotland.
Painted by Sir Henry Raeburn. Schenck & Ghemar, Lithographers, Edinburgh. L. Ghemar Delt. 1849.
Published by G. Crawford 6, South St. Andrew Street, Edinburgh. [c.1850.]
Tinted lithograph heightened in white, on india paper. Image 370 x 280mm, 14½ x 11". Minor tears in outer edges, surface dust on title area and margins.
Fine portrait of Niel Gow (1727 - 1807), Scottish violinist and composer, sitting holding his violin to his chin, dressed in tartan breeches. In the autumn of 1787 Burns met him at Dunkeld, and the poet describes him as "a short, stout-built, honest Highland figure, with his greyish hair shed on his honest social brow; an interesting face, marking strong sense, kind open-heartedness, mixed with unmistrusting simplicity". As a player of Scotch dance music, especially of reels and strathspeys, Gow was in his time without superior or rival. He recieved an annuity from the Duke and Duchess of Atholl and regularly played at Dunkeld House and Blair Atholl. He composed a large number of melodies, nearly a hundred of which are included in the volumes published by his son Nathaniel. Four portraits of Gow were painted by Sir Henry Raeburn (1756 - 1823).

James Graham (1612-1650), soldier. The Royalist general 'of most resolute and undaunted spirit'. Montrose actually began his military career fighting against Charles I. In 1640 he led the Scottish Covenanting armies across the Tweed and occupied the Northeast of England. At the onset of the Civil War, he changed allegiance and raised a Royalist army in Scotland. In 1644-5 he was eventually forced to join Charles II in exile. Five years later, a final attempt to defeat the Covenanters ended in his capture and execution. According to the NPG 'probably after Gerrit van Honthorst'.

Gretna Green.
Gretna Green.
Drawn on the Spot by I. Clark.
London, Published by Smith, & Elder, Fenchurch Street, 1825.
Coloured aquatint. 475 x 625mm. 18¾ x 24¾". Some restoration.
A view of the centre of Gretna Green in Dumfriesshire, from the "Views in Scotland" series. In the C18th & C19th the village became the favourite destination of eloping couples because of disparity between marriage laws: in England brides under 21 needed parental consent, while in Scotland they could be as young as twelve. Situated just over the border it was the nearest place for elopers to marry. As long as there were at least two witnesses even the blacksmith could perform the ceremony. Although it cannot be proved it is believed that 'I. Clark" is the Scottish painter John Heaviside Clark, famed as 'Waterloo Clark' for his early sketches of the battle. He was also skilled in aquatinting, and certainly none of this series has a named engraver. This is one of the few plates in the series to feature 'action': a coach and four has just pulled up in a cloud of dust and locals are rushing out, probably to offer their services.
