Masaccio pinx. N. Strixner del:
[Munich: J. Stuntz, c.1825.]
Tinted lithograph. Sheet 520 x 390mm (20½ x 15½").
Self-portrait of Masaccio (Tommaso di Ser Giovanni di Simone, 1401-28), the first great painter of the Quattrocento period of the Italian Renaissance. As one of the first artists to use linear perspective he was hugely influential. This print was published in 'Les Oeuvres Lithographiques', a huge series of reproductive plates of paintings in German collections, by Johann Nepomuk Strixner (1782 - 1855) and Ferdinand Piloty (1786-1844). Their work did much to popularise lithography, as they showed the technique could achieve all the same effects as other engraving techniques.

Joseph Nollekens, Esqr. R.A.
From the original picture by F. Abbott in his own possession drawn by W.Evans, Engraved by J. Vendramini.
Published October 21, 1816 by T. Cadell & W. Davies Strand London.
Stipple 325 x 380mm 12½ x 15 inches.
Joseph Nollekens with a bust of Charles James Fox, the painting hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Born in London, Joseph Nollekens was the son of a Flemish genre painter. He trained with a Flemish sculptor in London before going to Rome in 1762. Gaining employment in Bartolomeo Cavaceppi's workshop, he restored ancient sculptures as well as terracottas by such artists as Michelangelo and Giambologna. In this venerable city, Nollekens learned from the antique, perfecting a Neoclassical style that soon earned him a reputation and a small fortune. He was particularly popular among the English tourists who visited Rome on the Grand Tour. Returning to England in 1770, Nollekens soon became a member of the Royal Academy. While he was a prolific tomb-maker, he is best known for his portrait busts in plaster or marble. His own favorites were the rare mythological statues he carved, particularly the goddesses, whose elegance recalls Mannerist sculpture. Despite his wealth and reputation, Nollekens was known for his parsimonious and eccentric ways. A former student, who claimed to have been deceived into believing that he would inherit Nollekens's fortune with several other of Nollekens's associates, wrote a spiteful biography about him.

Joseph Nollekens (1737-1823) was a sculptor from London generally considered to be the finest British sculptor of the late 18th century. He was also a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768. He studied first under Peter Scheemakers before studying and working as an antiques dealer, restorer and copier in Rome from 1759 to 1770. Returning to England he became one of the most fashionable portrait sculptors in the country. Nollekens enjoyed the patronage of George III and went on to sculpt a number of British political figures, including George III himself, William Pitt the Younger, Charles James Fox, and Charles Watson-Wentworth. He also made busts of a number of figures from the arts such as Laurence Sterne and Benjamin West. Additionally, he made a large number of tombs. Nollekens died in London, having made a fortune from his work. A notorious miser, he left around £200,000 in his will.
