This was done with the support of Britain and France, which took Savoy & Nice as a reward (much to the disgust of the Italian national hero Garibaldi, a native of Nice). This was an important event in Italian Unification.

The Jacobin Club, the most famous and influential political club in the development of the French Revolution, which provided the leadership for the Reign of Terror. The sign outside the building reads: 'Société des Jacobins/ Unité, Liberté, Egalité, Indivisibilité/ de la République, Fraternité ou la Mort'. Eventually the other Republicans attacked the club and shutting it down. Robespierre, the Jacobin leader, was shot in the jaw (possibly self-inflicted) and was guillotined the next day. Published in the 'Collection complète des tableaux historiques de la révolution française'.

Engraving with accompanying letterpress sheet, 17th century watermark; each 470 x 350mm (18½ x 13¾") very large margins. Slight loss near right leg. Staining bottom right on edge of margins.
Joan of Arc (c.1412-31), the 'maid of Orléans' who helped to relieve the town in 1429. Captured at Compiègne in 1430, she was handed over to the English, tried and found guilty, and burnt at the stake, aged 19 in May 1431. She was posthumously pronounced innocent and canonized as a Roman Catholic saint in 1920. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.

The Grand Duchess standing in front of a draped curtain, wearing a brocaded dress and pearl jewellery. Her marriage to Francesco I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, took place on 18 December 1565 in Florence. Francesco I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1541 - 1587), father of Marie de Médicis, Queen and Regent of France (1573 - 1642). The Grand Duke stands on a balcony, wearing breeches and ermine-trimmed cape, with cross of the Order of St Stephen. His left hand rests on a cane, with a draped curtain behind. Plates 2 and 3 from a series of twenty-four portraits 'La Gallerie du Palais du Luxembourg', by Gérard Edelinck (1640 - 1707) after Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640). The paintings now hang in Paris, in the Musée du Louvre.

A pair of portraits of Dom João Manuel (1537-54), Hereditary Prince of Portugal , and his wife, Joanna of Austria (1535-73), who was the daughter of João's paternal aunt Isabella of Portugal and of his maternal uncle, Emperor Charles V. Their son Sebastian became king of Portugal in 1557. From a series of 39 'Portraits of European Rulers', engraved by van der Heyden, Frans Huys and Jan Collaert. The British Museum's description of the series notes 'Most of these portraits are engraved two on a plate, but the pairs have almost always been cut apart'.

Joseph I (1714-1777) the Reformer, King of Portugal. His private life was aired by his wife, Spanish Infanta, Mariana Victoria of Spain, who did not like the King's affairs and only exposed them to acquaintances. He was devoted to the Church and opera, and assembled one of the greatest collections of operatic scores in Europe. With Joseph's ascent to the throne in 1750, he placed power in the hands of Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal, who sought to overhaul all aspects of economic, social and colonial policy to make Portugal a more efficient contender with other European powers.

A portrait in an oval of Bernard Rene Jourdan, Marquis de Launay (1740-1789), governor of the Bastille and commander of the attached garrison. On the 14th July 1789 the revolutionaries stormed the Bastille, de Launay was seized and lynched by the attacking mob. His head was cut off and paraded through the streets on a pike.

Don Juan Jose de Austria (1629-1679) was a Spanish general and political figure. His father, Philip IV of Spain trained him for military command and political administration from a young age. He was sent to Naples in 1647 to support the viceroy of the time against the popular rising against the royal authority. He was then sent as viceroy to Sicily where he was recalled to complete the pacification of Catalonia. He was viceroy to restore order under a very strict "manu militari", under his father's instruction.

Jorge Juan y Santacilia (1713-1773) the Spanish mathematician, scientist, naval officer and mariner. In 1734, King Philip V of Spain asked Juan and fellow scientist Antonio de Ulloa to join the French Geodesic Mission organised by the French Academy of Sciences from Paris, under the command of the astronomer Louis Godin. The mission was to measure the length of a degree of meridian arc at the Equator in South America and to determine the roundness of the Earth. He discovered that the Earth is not perfectly spherical but is oblate. He also successfully measured the heights of the Andes using a barometer. For his work and discoveries in Ecuador and Peru he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1757 he founded the Royal Astronomical Observatory of Madrid. Print based upon the bust portrait made by the sculptor Felipe de Castro for Jorge Juan's tomb in the church of St Martin, Madrid.

Despite the title, this lithograph shows the surrender of Jülich in 1622, during the Eighty Years' War, with the Spanish commander Ambrosio Spínola receiving the keys to the city from the governor. The original painting by José Leonardo (1601-52) is now in the Prado Museum. This lithograph is from the 'Colección lithographica de cuadros del rey de España el señor Fernando VII'.

The Kalmuck or Kalmyk is the name given to the Western Mongols who inhabit the North Caucasus Territory of Russia. The Kalmyks migrated from Dzhungaria to this area in 1607. In this scene two Kalmyk horsemen, one of which is holding a bird, ride up to three young women conversing with a man smoking a pipe.

Portrait of Jean-Balthazar Keller (1638-1702), Swiss gunfounder who replaced his brother Jean-Jacques as master of the French foundries in 1694. He is shown leaning on an unfinished cannon, gesturing at his equestrian statue of Louis XIV. This statue was cast in a single piece in 1692, the first time this had been achieved. Placed in the Place Vendôme, it was destroyed in 1792 during the French revolution, a few months short of its centenary. Painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud in 1694 to celebrate Keller's two achievements, this print was first issued c.1700. The publisher here, Honoré Thomas Bligny, specialised in reissuing plates.

A portrait of François Christophe Kellermann (1735 - 1820), on horseback in military costume with his sword held in his right hand. Kellermann was a French military commander, later the Général d'Armée, a Marshal of France who served in varying roles throughout the entirety of two major conflicts, the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Jean was a publisher in Paris on the rue St. Jean de Beauvais, appearing in the Bibliographe de France, a 19th century registry of prints, from 1811 to 1838.
