Half-length portrait of Thomas Girtin (1775-1802), holding a porte-crayon and sketch-book. Watercolourist, friend and rival of J.M.W. Turner. , with whom he closely worked. He died aged just twenty-seven, shortly after completing his most ambitious and spectacular work, the Eidometropolis, a 360-degree panorama of London measuring over 100ft. The portrait was published by his brother John Girtin, who had just lost his stock in a fire of November 1816.

Self portrait of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666), best known as Guercino or Il Guercino, painting a canvas at his easel. Guercino was an Italian Baroque painter from the region of Emilia, and active in Rome and Bologna. Guercino is Italian for squinter, a nickname that was given to him because he was cross-eyed. He is especially noted for his many superb drawings. He is painting Amour in form of a little angel, who is holding a bow in his left hand and pulling the collar of a dog with his right.

Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/8-1543), Augsburg-born artist who worked in England between 1526 and 1528, and took up permanent residence in the country in 1532. During this time he painted many royal commissions, including a series of portraits (of which 'The Ambassadors' in the National Gallery is the most famous) and a mural glorifying the Tudor dynasty which was destroyed when Whitehall Palace burnt down in 1698.

Ozias Humphry (1742-1810) was an English painter of portrait miniatures. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1791; a year later he was appoionted Portrait Painter in Crayons to the King. In 1773 he began his travels, heading first to Italy with George Romney. On his return four years later he began to compile his manuscript 'A Memoir of George Stubbs', on everything that Stubbs had related to him. From 1785 to 17687 he travelled around India producing miniatures and sketches. Regrettably in 1797 his sight failed him, and he had to cease all work, spending his last years in Hampstead, North London.

An illustration from 'The most notable Antiquity of Great Britain vulgarly called Stone-heng', 1655 a report commissioned by James I on the origin and nature of Stonehenge.

Despite the title this is not a portrait of Rubens, but a self-portrait of Jacob Jordaens with his parents, brothers & sisters, with a family servant. The three cherubs represent deceased children. The original oil was purchased from Houghton by Catherine II of Russia and now resides in The Hermitage, St. Petersburg. From Houghton Gallery. Jordaens (1593-1678), a Flemish Baroque painter based in Antwerp. When Rubens died in 1640 he became the most important painter in Antwerp for large-scale commissions.

Very fine mezzotint, sheet 380 x 295mm (15 x 11½") Trimmed within plate losing letters in the attribution. Tipped into album sheet at sides.
Self portrait of Swiss artist Johann Koella (1740-78). Whole length seated at easel in studio holding a palette, brushes and a painting stick in his left hand, his right hand to hip and legs crossed. He wears a hat, waistcoat and shirt, breeches and slippers. There is a table to the left with supplies on it and a lute and lyre rests on a table covered in a cloth to the right. In the background two paintings hang on the wall and a curtain is drawn.

Frontispiece to a posthumous edition of Gérard de Lairesse's (1640-1711) 'Principles of design', a collection of Lairesse's lectures first published in 1701. Lairesse, a Dutch painter and theorist of classical bent, was held in the highest regard during his lifetime. The frontispiece originally featured an image of an aspiring artist studying an artwork, guided by a Muse, but this has been replaced by a Dutch engraving of a self-portrait by Lairesse.

Portrait of the painter Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873); full-length, in profile, walking to right, holding stick and top hat. He was elected R.A. on 10 February 1831. Sketched from life by Count Alfred Guillaume Gabriel d'Orsay (1801 - 1852), Paris-born artist and gentleman of fashion. His profile sketches of his contemporaries, to the number of 125, include among them nearly all the literary, artistic, and fashionable celebrities of that time.

A portrait of either of two brothers: Hans Sebald Lautensack (1524-c.1560), a painter and etcher; or Heinrich Lautensack (1522-1590), a painter, collector and goldsmith. This print was published in 'Les Oeuvres Lithographiques', a huge series of reproductive plates of paintings, by Johann Nepomuk Strixner (1782 - 1855) and Ferdinand Piloty (1786-1844). Their work did much to popularise lithography, as they showed the technique could achieve all the same effects as other engraving techniques.

Portrait of Mary Lawrence (1749 - c.1830) as Una, reclining on the ground within a wood, a beam of light from upper left landing on her head. She wears classical dress, leaning on her right elbow and twisting her long hair with her right hand; a lion at right and donkey either side, landscape with hill and sea beyond. Lawrence was a flower painter and watercolourist, wife of Richard J Lawrence of Jamaica. She exhibited at the RA 1794 - 1830 (after 1813 as Mrs. Kearse). In Edmund Spenser's (1552? - 1599) epic poem 'The Faerie Queene', Una was the wife of Finnbheara, king of the Irish fairies. After Benjamin West (1738 - 1820).

Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), after an unfinished self-portrait now in the Royal Academy (No 03/950). The portrait was commissioned by George IV, who is supposed to have suggested that Lawrence wear 'the costume of his Doctor-of-laws gown' without the cap as 'we shall not recognise you without your bald head'. However the artist shows himself in everyday clothing.

Francis Le Piper (d.1695), artist whose only surviving works are a series of iillustrations to Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras' (divided between Tate and Rye Art Gallery) and a group of drawings in the British Museum. According to Buckeridge (whose memoir is the source of all biographical information about the artist), Le Piper's travels took him as far as Egypt. This portrait, published by Isaac Beckett (for whom Le Piper worked at one point), is the only known likeness of Le Piper.

Sir Peter Lely (1618 - 1680), portrait painter and Principal Painter to Charles II. Born of Dutch parents, he trained in Haarlem, came to London in the 1640s and quickly established a reputation as a portraitist, becoming easily the most fashionable painter of his time. He formed a celebrated collection of paintings and drawings and was well known for his high living.

Karl Friedrich Lessing (1808-1880) was a German historical and landscape painter. He accompanied Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow to Düsseldorf, after completing his time at the Berlin Academy, and he continued his studies later occupying his place as director of the academy, exercising great influence on the Düsseldorf school. Here he stands in a room with two canvases representing a historical event and a topographical landscape. On both walls and on the cupboard hang varying sizes of antlers. He is loading a gun, one of many weapons in the chest.
