Regrettably in 1797 his sight failed him, and he had to cease all work, spending his last years in Hampstead, North London.

He accompanied Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow to Düsseldorf, after completing his time at the Berlin Academy, and he continued his studies later occupying his place as director of the academy, exercising great influence on the Düsseldorf school. Here he stands in a room with two canvases representing a historical event and a topographical landscape. On both walls and on the cupboard hang varying sizes of antlers. He is loading a gun, one of many weapons in the chest.
