The Commemoration was held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Handel's death in 1759. George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) is depicted seated in the heavens above the London skyline; two angels, one crowning him with a laurel wreath, stand beside him.

An oval portrait of composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), engraved by Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) after Francis Kyte (d.1744). The ornate frame, which contains the title and a scene of Apollo and the Muses playing a concert, was designed by Hubert François Bourguignon Gravelot (1699-1773). This image was used as the frontispiece to ''Thirteen Celebrated Italian Duets, Accompanied with the Harpsicord or Organ, never before Printed, Composed by the late Mr Handel'', 1776.

Moritz Hauptmann (1792-1868) was a German music theorist, teacher and composer. Although all other pursuits gave place to his music, he did spend time with mathematical studies and employment as an architect. It wasn't until 1842 that his time finally came when he was appointed Kantor of the Thomanerchor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig (as post previoulsy occupied by Johann Sebastian Bach); and also appointed professor of music theory at the conservatoire founded by Felix Mendelssohn.

Famous by the mid-1760s, Haydn had become the most celebrated composer of his time by the 1780s, and in the last two decades of his life he was revered as a culture hero throughout Europe and, along with Mozart and Beethoven, one of the three 'Viennese Classics' He is often referred to as the "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet". He was instrumental in the development of the piano trio and the evolution of sonata form. Contemporary engraving possibly produced to coincide with Haydn's stay in London from 1791-5.

Remarkable print of a Welsh family of young virtuosi harpists. Eldest brother, Joseph Tudor Hughes (1827-41), was given a bardic name, ‘Blegwryd’, aged seven and at twelve he published British Melodies, with arrangements made by him for harp and piano. In 1838 he and his family emigrated to Virginia; they toured America, performing at the White House. Joseph drowned in the Hudson River. The second brother, David Edward (1831-1900) became a professor of music at St. Joseph's College, Bardstown, aged 19, but gave up music to be an inventor. In 1855 he patented a printing telegraph: his Hughes Telegraph System became an international standard. He also improved microphones and is believed to have noticed radio waves nearly a decade before they were proven to exist.

John Pyke Hullah (1812-1804) was an English composer and teacher of music. He entered the Royal Academy of Music in 1833, and wrote his first opera three years later using word by Dickens 'The Village Coquettes'. In 1847 a large building in Long Acre, called St. Martin's Hall was built by subscription and presented to Hullah and was inaugurated in 1850, but unfortunately was burnt to the ground ten years later. He gave a series of lectures at the Royal Institution and in Edinburgh, where he later stayed to conduct. In 1872 he was appointed by the Council of Education to Musical Inspector of training schools for the United Kingdom. In 1878 he travelled abroad to report on the condition of musical education in schools, and wrote a very valuable report.

John Bernhard Logier (1777-1846) the German music teacher. He invented the Chiroplast, a pedagogical device that guides the hands and fingers while playing the piano. He also developed his own teaching method, now called the 'Logier method', which he published in 'System der Musikwissenschaft' (1827), where pupils were taught with technical instruction done together with instruction in principles of harmony.

Jean Paul Egide Martini (1741-1816) was a composer of classical music. He is best known for his vocal romance 'Plaisir d'Amour', on which the 1961 Elvis Presley standard 'Can't Help Falling in Love' was based. Leaving Germany and settling in France he established a successful career as a court musician. He directed concerts for the Queen but adatpted well to the changing regimes throughout the French Revolution, and later wrote music for Napoleon's marriage as well as for the restored Chapelle Royale.

Edward Miller (1731-1807) was a musical director, organist and historian of Doncaster. As a composer he is most noted as the writer of the hymn tunes Rockingham and Galway. For a time he was a flautist in Handel's orchestra. In 1756 he was appointed organist of St George's Minster Doncaster, where he remained for 50 years. In 1786 Cambridge University awarded him a doctorate.

Engraved after a portrait by Cavaliere Andrea Casali (1705-84), Italian painter and dealer active in England.

She, Ann Mounsey, was the accompanist on that occasion.
