Thomas Gordon (1788 - 1841) major-general in the Greek army. From the rare folio 'Bildnisse ausgezeichneter Griechen und Philhellenen/Portraits des Grecs et des Philhelle`nes les plus ce´le`bres...' by Carl or Karl Krazeisen, published in Munich, Germany, with text in German and French. Published in parts between 1828 and 1831, the work contains 21 portraits and seven views or scenes. Krazeisen accompanied von Heideck and the Bavarian philhellenes to Greece in 1826 where he served as a junior officer. The portraits are amongst the best-known of the leaders of the War of Independence and are frequently reproduced. The original drawings are preserved in the National Gallery, Athens.

The Hungarian freedom fighter surrounded by the monstrous figures of oppression, including skeletal Austrian and Russian officers and a creature coiling around his feet holding a blazing torch with a tail labelled 'Kain', as he steps forward to right to rescue a beautiful woman representing freedom who lies swooningin the lap of a gorgon, a broken sword and paper labelled 'Constitution' beside her. Gorgey Artur (1818-1916), the Hungarian soldier and chemist. He fought in the Hungarain uprising of 1848 and had several successes against the Austrian until the Russians intervened and he surrendered to the Russian General Rudiger at Vilagos in 1849. He was confined at Klagenfurt where he occupied himself with chemistry, until 1867 when he was pardoned and returned to Hungary. Very atmospheric image.

Alexander Mikhailovich Gorchakov (1798-1883), Russian statesman. A talented scholar and linguist who attended school with Pushkin, Gorchakov entered the foreign office, becoming amabassador at Vienna during the Crimean War and then minister of foreign affairs. In 1863 he was appointed Chancellor of the Russian Empire, a post he held during a period which included the sale of Alaska to the United States, the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1 and the Russo-Turkish Campaign of 1878.

A view of Granada, published in 'Travels through Spain in the Years 1775 and 1776 in which several monuments of Roman and Moorish Architecture are Illustrated by Accurate Drawings taken on the Spot' by Henry Swinburne (1743-1803), an account of his travels with Sir Thomas Gascoigne, when Spain was relatively unknown land. It was the first antiquarian book on Spain to be published in England, describing early Roman and Moorish architecture with historical background.
From a scrapbook compiled by Rev. Willaim Bradford (1780-1857), Chaplain and war artist during the Peninsula Wars.

Charles Grant, Vicomte de Vaux (1749-c.1818) was a French soldier and writer. He served as a sous-lieutenant in the Scots Company of the Garde du Roi, and by 1781 was a lieutenant colonel. After the French Revolution, the vicomte escaped to England, where, in 1802, he appealed for an appointment on refugee allowance from the war Office. The vicomte was obviously fascinated by his ancestry and published his Mémoires de la Maison Grant in London in 1796. Without the income from his property in Mauritius or France, Grant devoted much of his time in exile to his writing, including a 'History of Mauritius' (1801).

In 1819 Papal troops demolished the community of Sonnino, arresting several hundreds of prisoners. The men were detained in the Castel Sant’Angelo, whereas the women and children were held in a workhouse adjacent to the Thermes of Diocletian. After several months the Roman authorities could not maintain the women and children at such a high expense, so released them. Maria Grazia, whom was amongst these captives, became mistress of Schnetz and remained in Rome to make a long career of posing, becoming somewhat of a celebrity.

There has been a hostel at the Great St Bernard Pass since the 9th century, built for the protection of travellers crossing the alps. It was at the hospice that the St Bernard dog breed was created, bred to help with mountain rescues in the treacherous terrain.

A costume plate from John Cam Hobhouse's 'A Journey Through Albania, and other Provinces of Turkey in Europe and Asia, to Constantinople'. Hobhouse (1st Baron Broughton, 1786-1869), met Byron at Trinity College, Cambridge, and travelled with him through Italy, Greece and Turkey, a journey which resulted in this book. Hobhouse became Byron's executor after the poet's death in 1824. Despite being imprisoned in Newgate for writing a Radical pamphlet in 1819 Hobhouse became a successful Whig politician, serving in government as Secretary at War, Chief Secretary for Ireland, First Commissioner of Woods and Forests and President of the Board of Control. He became a Privy Councillor in 1832.

After Francis Smith (fl.1760s) painter, apparently born in Naples, where he painted topographical views for the tourist trade. He accompanied Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore (1731-1771, named in inscription) to the Levant 1763-4, then exhibited in London 1768-73. From a series of Ottoman costume plates and portraits.

James 'Athenian' Stuart (1713–88) and Nicholas Revett (1720–1804) travelled on a Grand Tour of Italy, the Balkans & Greece between 1748-55. On their return they started work on the 'Antiquities', which was the first accurate survey of the surviving classical buildings of Athens.

Pope Gregory XVI (1765 – 1846), born Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari, named Mauro as a member of the religious order of the Camaldolese, was Pope of the Roman Catholic Church from 1831 to 1846. Strongly conservative and traditionalist, he opposed democratic and modernizing reforms in the Papal States and throughout Europe, seeing them as fronts for revolutionary leftism, and sought to strengthen the religious and political authority of the papacy.
