Gaston of Foix, Duke of Nemours (1489-1512), French military commander whose brilliant six month Italian campaign as a 21 year-old commander in 1511-2 earnt him the nickname 'the Thunderbolt of Italy'. His death in the Battle of Ravenna was a huge loss to the French. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). [1660]
Engraving with accompanying letterpress sheet, 17th century watermark; each 470 x 350mm (18½ x 13¾"), with very large margins.
Gaston, Duke of Orléans (1608-60), third son of Henri IV and Marie' de Medici, and brother of Louis XIII. Gaston's life involved numerous political intrigues, and he twice fled France following plots against his mother and Cardinal Richelieu. During the wars of the Fronde (1648-53) in France, he passed from one side to the other without loyalty, and was exiled by Cardinal Mazarin at their conclusion. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men (and women) hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (in which Gaston was perhaps surprisingly included, given his history with Richelieu). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.

Ignacio da Silva Valente pinx. F. Bartolozzi sculp em Lisboa em 1812
Engraving, platemark 270 x 205mm (10½ x 8") very large margins.
Manuel Jorge Gomes de Sepúlveda 1735-1814), Portuguese soldier and governor of Capitania do Rio Grande de São Pedro in Portuguese-governed Brazil. Engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815). Born in Florence, Bartolozzi was elected a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768 (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal. This was one of Bartolozzi's final prints; its rarity can be deduced from the fact that when Calabi and de Vesme included the print in their Bartolozzi catalogue raisonné it was without having actually seen an impression.

Engraving with letterpress on verso. 268 x 408mm. 10½ x 16". Repairs to centrefold.
Extremely rare bird's-eye plan of Geneva, engraved by Paolo Forlani for Giulio Ballino's "Civitatum Aliquot Insigniorum, et locorum, magis munitorum exacta delineatio" (three editions 1567-9, printed by Bolognino Zaltieri). This collection of townplans pre-dates the Braun & Hogenberg 'Civitatis Orbis Terrarum', which is generally believed to be the first of its kind. It is also among the first engraved views of Geneva. Forlani was a major figure in the Venetian map trade in the C16th, one of the so-called "Lafreri-type" engravers. His work is prized for the quality of the engraving, of which this is a fine example, with crisp, detailed engraving. Under the map is a 12-point key to the important buildings.

Etching. Plate size: 235 x 340mm. 9¼ x 13¼".
Birdseye view of Geneva during the 17th century. Merian simplified and reduced his great panorama of Geneva, which was based on Claude Chastillon's (1547-1616) drawing. Drawn from the heights of the 'bois de la Baite', a wood situated to the south of Geneva, the city is on the whole represented both accurately and in detail, excepting a few inexactitudes in depicting the cathedral's towers, or the square tower located between the city gates. Mountains still take the fantastic and conventional form of sugar loaves.

A view of Hôtel Byron, between Chillon and Villeneuve on Lake Geneva, which was the largest hotel on the Riviera when it opened in 1841. However only two years later it was up for sale by auction. It reopened in 1849 but closed for renovation soon after. The Wolff brothers took it over in 1861 and by 1870 Gustave was the sole proprietor. He could not make the hotel pay and sold up, and his successor failed also. It then became Chillon College, a school for British colonials, described by the Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times described it as the 'Eton of Switzerland'. The building burned down in 1933.
