Engraving after Rembrandt's 1654 painting 'The Standard Bearer', believed to be a portrait of the collector Floris Soop (1604-1657). The painting is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It is one of numerous engravings made after Rembrandt by William Pether (c.1738-1821), mezzotint engraver and painter, best remembered as the engraver of prints after Rembrandt and Joseph Wright of Derby. These prints stand amongst the finest mezzotints ever produced in Britain, demonstrating how mezzotint was the printed medium which most effectively reproduced the chiaroscuro effects of these painters.

A young woman in classical dress, resting her forehead on an urn. Lieutenant-general John Stanwix (1690-1766), his daughter from his first marriage and his second wife were all drowned on the packet boat 'The Eagle' on a voyage from Dublin (where he had been inspecting the troops in Ireland) to Holyhead. The British Museum has a reversed print of the same image, engraved by Jean Baptiste Lucien, which has a note stating this is a self-portrait of Kauffman.

An interior scene depicting a lady and a gentleman. The lady is seated and leaning her elbow on a table. She has short curled hair and wears a veil. The gentleman, standing, is seen wearing a long wig and cravat. On the table lie a hat, sash and sword, a glass and a decanter. Printed by Pierce Tempest (1653 - 1717) publisher of Marcellus Laroon's Cries Of London as well as a great range of other material. In his later years he spent more time dealing than publishing.

Thais, a prostitute of Athens; fictional character from the 'Eunuchus' by Terence. 'A subject which appealed equally to the moral and to the dissolute' (Webster). One of two mezzotints for which Francis Wheatley produced designs before his Irish period, the other being 'Sidgismonda'. Said to be a portrait of Emma Hart, later Lady Hamilton (see British Museum cataloguing ref: AN902405001), although she did not come to London until the early 1780s.

Standing in a line are three girls with books under their arms, the girl at left her hands under her apron, looking at the ground; the central figure with a half-open fan and a posy of flowers tucked unto her dress, and the third with flowers on her bonnet; at right a figure on horseback enters the gate, a guard beside. The print was sold in the Bretherton 1799 sale as 'The French Girls', suggesting that it was never given a title.

Three heads in a roundel; the first man wears a turban and elaborately tassled garb, the woman also looks richly dressed in a headband and jewellery. The man in the middle looks to be wearing a helmet. Joseph Banks was a notable patron of natural sciences and was a leading member of the Society of Dilettanti, which helped to found the Royal Academy. He was elected president of the Royal Society in 1778, a position he held for forty one years.

Although the DNB calls this a portrait of Sarah Trimmer (1741-1810), evangelist and children's writer, the NPG notes that it ''is in fact one of Mrs Trimmer's six daughters'', one of whom was Selina (1764-1829), who became governess to the family of the Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.

A portrait of a man in Turkish costume shown sitting in a corner with a long pipe. The original work was painted in the studio of Bonington's friend Eugène Delacroix, the props were taken from the studio and the setting imaginary. The oil painting was hung in an exhibition held for the benefit of the Greeks who were fighting for independence from Turkey.

Etching, platemark 195 x 145mm (7¾ x 5¾"). Slight staining; good impression.
Rembrandtesque print by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66) who specialised in etchings either copied from, or in the style of Rembrandt. Born in Peterborough, Worlidge was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married. His widow issued his plates in 1766 and 1767 afater his death with added numbers in the top right corner to correspond with the numbers in the catalogue of his prints which she produced. This is a lifetime impression before the number '62' was added in top right.
