Jimmy Wilde (1892-1969'), Welsh miner turned army PT instructor, the original ‘Mighty Atom’, but also the 'Ghost with the Hammer in his Hand' and the 'Tylorstown Terror. He was the world’s first World Flyweight Champion and was ranked as the number 1 flyweight of all-time by the International Boxing Research Organization in 2006. He is shown having his hands strapped by his manager, Teddy Lewis, who had been reserve captain of Pontypridd RFC.

A lean pugilist, stripped to the waist, sits on the knee of a supporter as a fat publican pours the contents of a tankard into his mouth, trying to revive him. The punters stand around grim-faced at the loss of their bets. First published in 1814 by Aaron Martinet (BM Satires 12352).

On 8th March 1854, Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858) returned to continue the Opening of Japan to the west, which concluded with the Convention of Kanagawa on 31 March, 1854. This being his second visit saw the opening of Shimoda and Hakodate to foreign vessels. Perry’s landing in Yokohama on March 8 inspired a crowded scene of troops on parade before a horizon prickled with the masts of the black ships, as well as a solemn rendering of the commodore greeting the Japanese commissioners. Formal occasions-the presentation of American gifts, a banquet on Perry’s flagship, and a performance of sumo wrestling-were duly recorded.
