A rare mezzotint. Sheet 515 x 585mm (20½ x 23"). Trimmed within plate on three sides, into title at bottom, losing publication line and half of crest.
Illustration to the narrative poem 'Tam O' Shanter' written by Robert Burns in 1790, which describes a disturbing vision experienced by Tam on his way home from an inn: riding his horse Meg, he stumbles across some witches and demons in Alloway Kirk (seen burning in the background), who give chase. He escapes across a bridge over the River Doon (witches will not cross running water) but not before one catches Meg's tail and pulls it off.

Henry Tilson, Painter.
Henry Tilson, Painter. Grandson to the Bishop of Elphin, Pupil of Sr. Peter Lely. And a Friend of Dahl. He studied in Italy successfully the best Painters: He died in Lincolns Inn Fields, aged 36, and was buried 25.th Nov.r 1695 at St. Dunstans in the West. Vide. Walpoles Anecdotes.

Henry Tilson (1659-1695), the portrait painter. He studied under Sir Peter Lely and then worked for him. After Lely's death in 1680, Tilson went to Italy with Michael Dahl. On his return to England, Tilson obtained some repute as a painter of portraits in oil and crayons. He was very well connected, and was on his way to a successful career, when he shot himself in 1695, through disppointment in love.

Horace Walpole (1717-1797) the youngest son of Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. He was seen as one of the 18th century's most famous connoisseurs, collectors and socialites. He was a pioneer of the Gothic style in art, architecture and literature and formed an exceptional collection at Strawberry Hill, the 'little Gothic castle' which he designed in Twickenham.

Bust portrait of Sir David Wilkie (1785-1841). A Scottish painter. He was a pioneering genre painter and an original portraitist, and his scenes of Scottish peasant life won him much attention when he moved from Edinburgh to London in 1805. He was the friend of B.R. Haydon with whom he visited France in 1814. He was patronised by the Prince Regent and was made painter to King William IV, who later knighted him in 1836. His death on his return from India in 1841 was commemorated by Turner's painting, Burial at Sea.
