Johan Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741), German apothecary and botanist, aged 54 so dating the portrait to 1737. Weinmann established a botanical garden in Regensburg and published botanical works, most notably the eight-volume florilegium 'Phytanthoza iconographia' (1737-45), illustrated with fine mezzotint plates. Engraving by Johann Jakob Haid (1704-67), one of the engravers employed on the florilegium, after a portrait by Johann Leonhard Hirschmann (1672-1750), artist and printmaker who studied in the studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller as a young man. A head and shoulders portrait of minister George Whitefield (1714-1770), in wig and gown. The other two portraits are engraved portraits by Picot after Hone and Trotter after Russell.

Genre subject after Dutch artist Godfried Schalken, engraved by Johann Gottfried Haid (1714-1776), one of a German family of artists. In the early 1760s Haid worked in London for the influential publisher John Boydell, engraving pictures by artists also including Rembrandt and Reynolds. He later founded a school of mezzotint engraving in Vienna. This impression from the collection of John Chaloner Smith (1827-95), author of an authoritative four-volume catalogue of British mezzotint portraits.
