Half-length portrait of Dutch Admiral Michiel Adriaensz de Ruyter (1607-1676) ; standing with his left hand on his hip, in front of a drapery; wearing armour and a chain with pendant, holding a batton in his right hand; behind him stands a black boy servant holding a helmet; coat of arms at upper left, a view at sea with ships at the right. Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter is the most famous and one of the most skilled admirals in Dutch history. De Ruyter is most famous for his role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 17th century. He fought the English and French and scored several major victories against them, the best known probably being the Raid on the Medway.

A view of the port of Delft, looking towards the Delftse Schie, with parallel text in French. In 1893 the Schie became part of the Rhine-Schie canal extending to Leiden. From a series of around thirty views of the Hague and nearby towns by Hendrik Florisz Scheurleer Fz [junior] (c.1724-1768). Scheurleer had connections with England, occasionally printing for British publishers and in 1754 bringing out an English guide to the Netherlands. He is also remembered for instigating the first circulating library in the Netherlands (in 1750).

Throughout the Eighty Years War the Dunkirkers were constantly under fire from the fleet of the Dutch Republic. From 'Beschryvinghe van alle de Nederlanden...' Willem Jannsz Blaeu's 1612 edition of Lodovico Guicciardini's (1521-1589) description of the Netherlands.

Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (1584 - 1647). Frederick Henry was son of William the Silent, the principal leader of the Dutch struggle for independence against Spain. When his half-brother, Maurice Prince of Orange, died in 1625, Frederick became the third hereditary stadholder of the United Dutch Provinces. He married a lady-in-waiting to the exiled Queen of Bohemia. In 1641 their son, William II, married Mary, the daughter of Charles I of Great Britain. The Dutch Wars against the Spanish continued until the end of his reign. Shortly following his death in January 1648, peace was formally declared between the two countries. Engraving after Adriaen van de Venne (1589-1662), Dutch artist and writer based in Middelburg, Zeeland at this time. Impressions of the print were purchased by the States General, the ruling executive of the United Dutch Provinces.

Left sheet of a six-sheet print of the Spanish garrison withdrawing from Maastricht in 1632. Maastricht was deep in Spanish-held territory when the Dutch commander Frederick Henry, prince of Orange, attempted to capture it, but after a siege lasting more than two months, the Spanish withdrew, allowing the Dutch Republic to gain an important victory in the Dutch War of Independence against the Spanish.

Full length portrait of Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer (1526-88), a Haarlem wood merchant who is said to have led a company of 300 fighting women during the Spanish siege of the city in 1573, although a contemporary account only describes her as an unusually fearless woman who worked night and day carrying earth to the city walls to rebuild the defences.

The two female subjects in this attractive composition are wearing wooden clogs; this would indicate a Dutch setting. Traditional clogs were often worn for heavy labour, and today they remain in use as protective clothing in agriculture and in some factories and mines. Little seems to be known about the artist, who worked on the Continent around the time of the First World War.

Despite the title, this lithograph shows the surrender of Jülich in 1622, during the Eighty Years' War, with the Spanish commander Ambrosio Spínola receiving the keys to the city from the governor. The original painting by José Leonardo (1601-52) is now in the Prado Museum. This lithograph is from the 'Colección lithographica de cuadros del rey de España el señor Fernando VII'.

Matthias (1557-1619) was invited to become Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands in 1578 by the rebelling Dutch, against the will of his uncle, Spanish king Phillip II. He left the county when the Seventeen Provinces declared themselves a republic in 1581; he ruled as Holy Roman Emperor from 1612 to 1619, during this time the imperial capital moved from Prague to Vienna. From the 'Geschichtsblätter' (history sheets) published by Franz and Abraham Hogenberg between 1570 and 1610.

Half-length portrait of Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen (1604-79), governor of the Dutch possessions in Brazil (1636-44), in armour and sash. He became rich by running the sugar plantations with slave labour. His need for slaves was so great he took Elmina, the famous slave fort in Ghana, from the Portuguese in 1637.

Double portrait of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (1584 - 1647) standing, and Amalia van Solms, Princess of Orange (1602 - 1675) seated to left. They are placed in an interior with a parrot on a bar across the top of an arched window behind the princess, and a little toy dog at the prince's feet. After Jacob Jordaens (1593 - 1678), painter and etcher in Antwerp. Frederick Henry was son of William the Silent, the principal leader of the Dutch struggle for indendence against Spain. When his half-brother, Maurice Prince of Orange, died in 1625, Frederick became the third hereditary stadholder of the United Dutch Provinces. He married a lady-in-waiting to the exiled Queen of Bohemia, and their son, William II, married in 1641 Mary, the daughter of Charles I of Great Britain. The Dutch Wars against the Spanish continued until the end of his reign. Shortly following his death in January 1648, peace was formally declared between the two countries. With a crest bearing the motto 'Cavendo Tutus', and dimensions of the original painting lower left.
