A large, separate-issue view of Falmouth, much larger than the plate of the town in Daniell's famous 'A Voyage Round Great Britain'. It is taken from the head of the harbour, with Falmouth on the right and Pendennis Castle on a promontary in the centre. As usual with Daniell's aquatints, he has taken the easy option of adding any etched or engraved lines, not even in the rigging of the ships.

A fleet of frigates stationed off Gravesend forming a blockade of the Thames at a time of threat of attack by Napoleonic France. William Daniell (1769-1837), was born in Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey, son of a bricklayer who owned a public house called The Swan in Chertsey. Daniell’s future career was dramatically changed when he was sent to live with his uncle Thomas (1749-1840) after the premature death of his father in 1779. His uncle was an artist and later Royal Academician, and William became his pupil. Uncle and nephew left Britain in April 1785 to voyage throughout China and India. In Calcutta in 1791, they held a lottery of their combined paintings, using the proceeds to continue their travelling and sketching. They returned to Britain in 1794, where they put their experiences to use in exhibition-size oil paintings. Daniell’s ‘View of the East India Fleet in the Sunda Strait’ reflects his travels, and in 1819 he published an illustrated book A Picturesque Voyage to India by way of China. He made sketching tours throughout the British countryside, publishing A Voyage Around Great Britain (1814-25). Around this time, in 1821, he was elected a Royal Academician. His shipping scenes, such ‘A Bird’s-Eye View of the East India Dock at Blackwell’ (National Maritime Museum, London), were supplemented by greatly admired battle pieces. In 1825, he won a prize of £100 for a pair of the ‘Battle of Trafalgar’, exhibited at the British Institution. He continued to work until his death 12 years later.

In 1797 the old bridge over the Tweed was washed away by floods, and the Scottish engineer John Rennie (1761-1821) was called in to build this bridge. He used the new technique of combining cast iron with stone to create wide arches previously unheard of in bridge construction. The Kelso Bridge was so impressive that he won contracts to build three major London bridges, Waterloo (a larger version of this bridge), Southwark & London Bridge (completed from his design after his death). In 1854 the Kelso population had to be read the Riot Act when they protested against the bridge tolls, fifty years after completion, and long after the construction had been paid for. Three years later the tolls were abolished. This plate attests to the skill of Daniell as an aquatinter: whereas most aquatints have lines added by engraving or etching, this image is pure aquatint, even the boatman's pole and the black border.

In 1784 he went to India with his uncle, the artist Thomas Daniell, where he assisted Thomas with his drawing and sketching. By the time they returned to England in 1794, William was not only a proficient draughtsman but had also perfected the art of aquatinting. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1807 and a Royal Academician in 1822. He refused the post of draughtsman to an Australian expedition to instead make numerous sketching tours throughout England and Scotland. Daniell is regarded as a superb aquatinter and his best works are thought to be among his Scottish views for ‘Voyage Round Great Britain’. He died in London in 1837.
