Pair of scarce mezzotints. Each c.260 x 190mm (10¼ x 7½"). Staining.
Industry: a young woman knitting. Indolence: a woman sits outisde in the cold, clasping her feet to her for warmth. The two prints followed in the tradition of didactic art which Hogarth (in series such as 'Industry and Idleness') had used so masterfully. The painter, George Carter (bap.1737-d.1794), was baptised in Colchester, Essex before moving to London. He travelled to Rome with John Singleton Copley (although there they parted, and Copley later described Carter as ‘a sort of snail which crawled over a man in his sleep, and left its slime and no more’). After exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy in the 1770s, Carter's apparent lack of success led him to travel more in later years, visiting Gibraltar, Russia and India.

Fine engraving. platemark 465 x 275mm (18¼ x 10¾"), with very large margins.
Fine engraving after a painting by Gavin Hamilton (1723-98), Scottish painter, archaeologist and dealer. While Hamilton's only identifiable pupil was David Allan, his encouragement assisted and influenced artists in Rome, where he worked, for over thirty years. He was instrumental, for instance, in persuading the sculptor Antonio Canova to abandon Rococo for a more restrained Neo-classical style. As the inscription states, this painting was then in the collection of the duke of Rochefoucault, French writer and explorer.

Justice. [&] Meekness. From a Painting of Raphael in the Vatican Palace at Rome.
R. Strange [... ] Romæ delineavit. et Aqua forte fecit A.o 1761, atque A.o 1765. Ære incidit Londini.
[London: Robert Strange, 1790.]
Pair of engravings. Each 510 x 350mm (20 x 13¾"), with very large margins.
Two female allegorical figures: Justice, seated on steps, looking at the scales in her right hand, holding the neck of an ostrich with her left; and Meekness, sitting on a stool, wearing a veil decorated with pearls, one hand at her bare breast, a lamb curled under her foot. Raphael painted the figures of Justice and Meekness in the Sala di Constantino, using oil instead of the fresco of the other decorations in the room, painted by his pupils. They were sketched by Robert Strange in Florence in 1761, engraved by him in London 1768 and published in a collected edition of his engravings. According to a letter written by Strange to the 'Scots Magazine' in 1761: 'leave was solicited, and after much difficulty granted [with the help of Cardinal Carlo Rezzonico, nephew of Pope Clement XIII], that I should erect a scaffold in the Vatican, which, for several years past, has been absolutely prohibited. I began, in that place, with two figures; the one representing 'Justice', and the other 'Meekness', by Raphael; they are in the Hall of Constantine, and were the last things he painted before his death. These figures contain all that is excellent in painting...'.

Stipple printed in sepia, platemark 250 x 190mm (9¾ x 7½"). Thread margins. Fine impression.
Woman sat on clouds with dove and sheep. Stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815) after his frequent collaborator Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727-85). Bartolozzi was born in Florence but migrated to England, and in 1768 was elected as a founding member of the Royal Academy in London (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal. This impression from the collection of Dr. Augusto Calabi of Milan, art historian who co-authored (with A.B. de Vesme) the authoritative catalogue raisonné of Bartolozzi's work.

Vreugde over de Vrede
Vreugde over de Vrede geslooten tusschen de Bataafsche Republiek en Engeland, te Amiens den 27 Maart A.o 1802. Proefdruck.
C. Meijer, inv. et del. J.E. Marcus sculp. 1802.
[Amsterdam c.1802.]
Proof impression of a very scarce engraving with etching. Sheet 630 x 490mm (24¾ x 19¼"). Trimmed to image. Creasing, bit messy.
A Dutch allegory of the Treaty of Amiens in 1802. The people dance around a plinth on which Britannia and a female allegory of the Batavian Republic stand together. To the left a female 'War' is knocked from the sky by a lightning bolt. After Holland had become a sister-republic of France after the fall of the Dutch Republic in 1795, she and her colonies became targets of the British. The Dutch had suffered considerable losses and thus the return of Cape Colony and their colonies in the West Indies (but not Ceylon) was something to be celebrated. However the ensuing peace only lasted a year and Cape colony was lost permanently in 1806. A preparatory sketch of the bottom right corner is in the Rijksmuseum.
