Engraving, platemark 325 x 200mm (12¾ x 8").
The seal of Queen Anne (1665-1714), who ascended the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1702. She favoured moderate Tory politicians, who shared her Anglican religious views over their opponents, the Whigs. The Whigs however grew more powerful during the course of the War of the Spanish Succession, until in 1710 Anne dismissed many of them from office. Despite many pregnancies, Anne died without surviving children and was the last monarch of the House of Stuart.

att Amsterdam by Nicolaus Visscher with Privilidge of ye High and Mighty States Generall.
Engraving, fine; sheet 365 x 260mm (14¼ x 10¼"). Trimmed; tipped into album sheet, slight nicks left edge.
Queen Anne (1665-1714), second daughter of James II, while a princess. In 1683 she married Prince George of Denmark, an alliance encouraged by Louis XIV, who wished to see the naval powers of England and Denmark united against the Dutch. As queen, Anne was intimate and dependent on Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, whose husband, the Duke, controlled the war against France. However, in 1711, she dismissed the Marlboroughs, largely because of her sympathy with Tory opposition to the Duke's conduct of the war. The most important constitutional landmark of her reign was the Act of Union with Scotland in 1707.

Cap.t William Bedloe
Cap.t William Bedloe Discoverer of the Popish Plott.
[Anon., c.1681]
Engraving, sheet 215 x 145mm (8½ x 5¾"). Trimmed. Glued to album sheet at edges.
William Bedloe (1650-80), informer and adventurer. In the 1670s Bedloe fell into a life of crime in London, spending time in jail for fraud and at one point fleeing for the continent with his brother. There they stole horses and committed fraud, going by different disguises and identities. In Valladolid they met Titus Oates (and stole from him too), but back in England Bedloe came into the public eye following the death of Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey. Godfrey died in mysterious circumstances soon after receiving testimony from Oates about a supposed 'Popish Plot' to assassinate Charles II, and Bedloe claimed he knew how Godfrey had died. Bedloe appeared at a number of trials relating to the plot, giving evidence that led to the deaths of a number of innocent people. An opportunist, Bedloe exploited the hysteria and gullibility surrounding the fabricated plot, earning well from his 'evidence', while his early death meant he was spared the retribution which Oates and others received once the smoke cleared.

Engraving. Sheet 445 x 310mm (17½ x 12¼") Trimmed into image, losing title and frame-like border. Cut.
An equestrian portrait of Charles I in armour, battle scene behind, an impression from the famous 'headless horseman' plate. The king has a distinct 'halo' from obvious re-engraving. Although the picture is attributed to van Dyck, the original oil (one copy now in Buckingham Palace, the other in Petworth House) depicted Charles I. The earliest known impression of this plate shows Cromwell, although even that example had been re-engraved. The next state is also Cromwell, followed by one headless, two of Louis XIV, a Cromwell, a Charles I and finally Cromwell again.

Printed for Robert Sayer at the Golden Buck Fleet Street. [n.d., c.1750.]
Scarce mezzotint with contemporary hand colour. Sheet: 255 x 350mm (10 x 13¾"). Trimmed to image. Repaired tears.
The three eldest children of Charles I, standing with two spaniels. On the left is Mary (mother of William III) and on the right is Charles II, both dressed as adults. In the centre is James II, still in skirts as was fashion for infant boys. Van Dyck's first version of this painting (probably commission by their mother, Henrietta Maria) showed both boys in skirts, but Charles I thought his heir should be in more respectful adult clothing. In 1819 this version can be seen hanging in the Second Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace in 'Pyne's Royal Residences'; it is now in the Queen's Gallery, Windsor Castle.

Engraving. Sheet 210 x 155mm (8¼ x 6¼"). Trimmed close to image. 17th century watermark.
Equestrian portrait of Charles I, sword in hand, mounted on a grey. The manuscript suggests the print was engraved from a painting by van Dyke that came up for sale in 1840; however it is a composite from different sources. William Marshal is most famous for his 'Eikon Basilike' (The Image of the King), published just ten days after Charles' execution, showing the monarch as a Christian martyr.
