Sir David Baird, first baronet (1757-1829), army officer. Baird served in India (1780-1801). In the Siege of Seringapatam in 1799, Baird (who twenty years earlier had been held captive by the Indians for nearly four years) led the British troops in their assault. In the palace Baird discovered the body of Tipu Sultan (an event commemorated by Sir David Wilkie's painting 'General Sir David Baird discovering the body of the Sultaun Tippoo Sahib' (National Gallery of Scotland). Baird also served in Egypt before heading a British attack on Cape Colony in 1806, culminating in the Battle of Blauberg near Cape Town. He then served in Spain before relinquishing his command for executive office in later years.

Profile portrait of General Sir Robert Boyd (1710 - 1794), in uniform, oval frame on a pediment adorned with a heraldic family crest. In 1756 Boyd served at the Siege of Minorca, and attempted to reach Admiral John Byng's fleet in an open boat with a message from the besieged Garrison Commander William Blakeney. Boyd was a witness at the subsequent court-martial at which Byng was tried for the loss of the Garrison. He was three times Governor of Gibraltar; 1776 to 1777, 1790 and 1790 to 1794. In the mid-eighteenth century, the British historian Thomas Birch (1705 - 1766) published a series of short biographies of famous figures from his nation’s past. Accompanying each of the 108 biographies was an engraved portrait of the subject, whose likeness was presented within an elaborate decorative setting. These ornamental frames were designed by Hubert-François Bourguignon (1699 - 1773)—commonly known as Gravelot—a Parisian artist then working in London. After finishing the drawing, Gravelot sent sheets to Amsterdam. There, the Dutch printmaker Jacob Houbraken (1698 - 1780) created the final image by combining Gravelot’s design with portraits. Campbell was instrumental in the union of Scotland with England; 1708-10, general under Marlborough in War of Spanish Succession; led the army supporting the Hanoverian cause in Scotland against the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion; supported Walpole until the aftermath of the Porteousriots when he voted against the reprisals on Edinburgh; 1741, led the successful opposition to Walpole in Scottish elections, but resigned all offices himself in 1742. In the army he saw service at the Battle of Maida, the Peninsular War under Wellington, the Battle of Albuerca, Salamanca, Nivelle, amongst many others. Spencer Compton, second earl of Northampton (1601-43), army officer. A courtier loyal to the crown, Compton was appointed master of the robes to Prince Charles in 1622 and became a close friend of the future king. He raised troops for the bishops' wars of 1639 and 1640 and was quick to side with the king after the outbreak of civil war in 1642. During the Battle of Hopton Heath in Staffordshire the following year he was killed by a blow to the head from a halberd. Watercolour by Silvester Harding (1745/51-1809), artist and publisher. After setting up a shop in Fleet Street with his brother Edward in 1786, Harding was chiefly employed in drawing portraits of theatrical celebrities, and in copying ancient portraits in watercolours, as here. The partnership was dissolved by 1798 (before this watercolour was made). Harding was known to, and esteemed by the collectors of his day, and many examples of his work are in the British Museum. His son George Perfect Harding also specialised in watercolour copies of early portraits.
