Together with the charismatic Maria Malibran, she was considered the greatest deeper-voiced female singer of the nineteenth century. Rossini was taken by her abilities that he taught her the contralto roles in his operas. Her debut at the Teatro alla Scala took place in 1842 as Neocle in the Italian version of 'Le Siege de Corinthe', which was followed by roles in operas by Marliani, Donizetti, Salvi and Pacini. Whilst in London, 1848, Meyerbeer transposed the role of the page Urbain in 'Les Huguenots', from soprano to contralto and composed a new aria for her.

Thomas Augustine Arne (1710 - 1778), composer, in a small oval on the side of a pedestal supporting an urn, from which a flaming phoenix emerges. Probably a frontispiece to one of his works. Arne's most famous work is the patriotic song, 'Rule, Britannia!'. He is buried at St Paul's, Covent Garden, London. The portrait after Robert Dunkarton (1744 - 1811?).

He is also known for producing the first collected edition of the works of Handel between 1787 and 1797, published in 180 parts.

Daniel François Esprit Auber (1782-1871) was a French composer. He was the son of a print-seller, and although he was expected to continue in the family business, his father allowed him to learn how to play many musical instruments. Auber attempted various compositions at a young age and one of his violin concertos was played at the Paris Conservatoire, which encouraged him to undertake a resetting of an old comic opera, Julie (1811). His opera "le Séjour militaire" was badly received in Paris, which forced him to stop for several years, however his failure in business and the death of his father in 1819, compelled him once more to turn to music. His second opera was just as unsuccessful, yet he persevered and the following year he was rewarded by his opera in three acts, "La Bergère Châtelaine". He then went on from success to success culminating particularly with "La muette de Portici" in 1828, which quickly became one of Europe's favourite operas of the time, and was the foundation work of the new genre, Grand Opera, which was consolidated by Rossini's Guillaume Tell the following year. In 1829 he was elected a member of the Institute and a year later, named director of the court concerts. His opera "Le Philtre", was taken and translated into Italian, and set by Donizetti as "l'elisir d'amore", one of the most successful comic operas of all time. He was made a member of the Legion of Honour in 1825 and attained the rank of commander in 1847. Napoleon III made him his Imperial Maître de Chapelle in 1857. Manon Lescaut of 1856 marked the beginning of his slowdown in compositions, which his opera "le premier jour de bonheur" as the last in 1868. He died during the upheaval of the Paris Commune in 1871.

Johann Sebastian Bach visited the court of Frederick II of Prussia in Potsdam in May 1747. The king played a theme for Bach and challenged him to improvise a fugue based on his theme. Bach obliged, playing a three-part fugue on a fortepiano (not an organ as here), which he soon enlarged and published as 'The Musical Offering', dedicated to Frederick. A photographic copy of a picture by Hermann Kaulbach (1846-1909).

Antonio Joseph Bazzini (1818 - 1897), Italian violinist, composer and teacher; bow in hand, violin tucked under left arm. One of the finest concert violinists of the 19th century, he contributed to a portion of the Messa per Rossini, a Requiem Mass composed to commemorate the first anniversary of Gioachino Rossini's death. As a composer his most enduring work is his chamber music which has earned him a central place in the Italian instrumental renaissance of the 19th century.

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869), the French Romantic composer. It was through mediations of Francis Wey, a great friend of Berlioz, that the musician agreed to sit for a portrait at Courbet's studio in 1850. Courbet must have been delighted at such an opportunity. Berlioz, then aged about forty-five years old, was an important figure on the artistic scene, and was a good friend of Victor Hugo, whom Courbet admired. However, the meeting was not a success. Berlioz was a secretive man, easily offended. Courbet, on the other hand, prided himself on his musical ability, and took advantage of the composer's presence to demonstrate his talents as a singer.
The original oil is in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris.

John Blow (1648-1708), the English baroque composer and organist, appointed to Westminster Abbey in 1669. His pupils included William Croft, Jeremiah Clarke and Henry Purcell. In 1685 he was named a private musician to James II. It is thought that his Venus and Adonis influenced Henry Purcell's later opera Dido and Aeneas. In 1687 he became choirmaster at St Paul's Cathedral and in 1699 he was appointed to the newly created post of Composer to the Chapel Royal.

Robert Nicolas-Charles Bochsa (1789-1856), harpist and composer who led a colourful life. After becoming entangled in counterfeiting, fraud and forgery in France, Bochsa fled to London in 1817 and was convicted in his absence. In London, Bochsa helped found the Royal Academy of Music in 1821, but was forced to resign as the secretary of the Academy in 1826 when his criminal conviction became known. He worked as director of the Kings Theatre until causing another scandal in 1839 by eloping with Anna Bishop, wife of composer Henry Bishop. They travelled the world performing together. Bochsa was director of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples for two years, before travelling to Australia with Bishop. They arrived in Sydney at the time of the goldrush in December 1855, but only gave one concert before Bochsa died. Bishop organised an elaborate tomb for him in Camperdown Cemetery, Sydney.

Portrait of François-Adrien Boieldieu (1775 - 1834), French composer, mainly of operas, often called "the French Mozart". In 1825, he produced his operatic masterpiece, La dame blanche (revived in the Salle Favart in 1997 and recorded by the conductor Marc Minkowski). Unusual for the time, La dame blanche was based on episodes from two novels by Walter Scott. The libretto by Eugène Scribe is built around the theme of the long-lost child fortunately recognized at a moment of peril. The style of the opera influenced Lucia di Lammermoor, I puritani, and La jolie fille de Perth. La dame blanche was one of the early attempts to introduce the fantastic into opera.

William Boyce (1711-1779), organist, composer, and music editor, seated beside a classically-ornamented table on which also lies a volume lettered 'Dr Boyce..'. His left arm rests on sheet music, quill in his right hand. Curtain drape behind to left, column at right, church organ in background beyond. Master of the king's musick from 1757, Boyce composed music for state occasions following the death of Handel. This included music for the funeral of George II and the wedding of George III and Queen Charlotte. Boyce also had an interest in the history and science of music, and published an important three-volume work of church music, 'Cathedral Music', which was influential in the repertoire of church music over the next century.

Marietta Brambilla (1807-1875) was an Italian alto. She was part of the famous family of singers, well known for the many interpretations of the works of Rossini. She was the first perfomer of Maffio Orsini in Lucrezia Borgia and Pierotto in Linda in Chamounix, both by Donizetti. She performed many times at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.

Charlotte Wilhelmina Franziska Brandes (1765-1788) was a German singer, pianist, actress and composer. Born in Berlin, she studied music in Weimar and piano and voice in Dresden. She had an amazing three octave range as a singer and performed successfully in courts and opera. In 1782 she moved to Hamburg and was designated as a singer in the Hamburg Theatre.

Louis Brassin (1840-1884) was a Belgian pianist, composer and music educator. He is best known now for his piano transcription of the Magic Fire Music from Wagner's Die Walküre, the second of Wagner's four opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen. At the age of seven, Brassin entered the Leizig Conservatory.

John Bull (c. 1563-1628), composer, organist, virginalist and organ builder, drawn by Childe after a portrait painted by an unknown artist in 1589, when Bull was aged 27. A favourite of Elizabeth, Bull was appointed Gresham Professors of Music, but had to flee England when incurring the displeasure of James I, settling in Antwerp. The original portrait is now in the Faculty of Music and Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, University of Oxford.

Half-lengh portrait in oval of Giovanni Carestini (c.1704-c.1760), the leading castrato in Handel's company in 1734. Described by music historian Charles Burney as 'a powerful and clear soprano', Handel's 'Alcina' and 'Ariodante' were written to take full advantage of Carestini's talents, giving the castrato arias in Italian in otherwise English performances. The painting by artist and connoisseur George Knapton (1698-1778) is only known through this engraving.

Jeanne Anais Castellan (1819-c.1858) was a French soprano. She studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Giulio Bordogni, Adolphe Nourrit and Laure Cinti-Damoreau. She began her stage career in Italy, appearing at Varese in 1837, and later at Turin, Bergamo, Rome, Milan and Florence, where in 1840 she married the singer Enrico Giampetro. She made her London debut at a Philharmonic concert in 1844, and appeared in her first London role of Lucia, a year later. She chose the same role for her debuts at the Theatre-Italien, Paris (1847), and Covent Garden (1848). At the Paris Opera in 1849 she sang Berthe in the premiere of Giacomo Meyerbeer's 'Le Prophete', and the following year she was particularly successful at Covent Garden in 'Mose' and 'Nabucco'.

Anaide Castellan-Giampietro (1821-1868), a Parisian singer, a student of Bordogni and Nourrit before having major success in Paris, London and throughout Italy. After her marriage to tenor Enrico Giampietro in 1840, they travelled to Mexico where they lived and performed for several years before a triumphant return to Europe in 1844. In London that year, she won an Imperial invitation to St. Petersburg after the visiting Emperor Nicholas I heard her sing.
