Number 15 from a series of plates of caricatures of the Roman court and its foreign visitors; a man with a book under his right arm. After Pier Leone Ghezzi (1675-1755), regarded as the first professional caricaturist. Based in Rome, he moved freely amongst the Italian nobility, even associating with Pope Clement XI. His satirical portraits include one of Vivaldi and several British grand tourists. Title taken from the index to 'Raccolta di XXIV Caricature Disegnate colla penna dell Celebre Cavalliere Piet: Leon: Ghezzi. Louis-Léopold Boilly, (1761 - 1845), He studied painting as a teenager before moving to Paris in 1785. He created images of the Parisian Salon lifestyle with great detail of expression, gesture, costuming, and textiles. His most famous printed lithographs are 'Recueil de grimâces'. A caricature of an African family (five adults and a baby), with exaggerated racial characteristics, from Louis Léopold Boilly's (1761 - 1845) 'Recueil de grimâces' series of studies of facial expression and gesture.

A full-length portrait in profile facing left of Daniel Alder, an indigo broker. The text 'Y.C.Tallow 60/-" issues from his closed mouth. In the shadow cast by the figure 'Hughes/ 14 Lombard St/Fleet St.' is printed in reverse. Hughes was a manufacturer and supplier of copper plates, Dighton would sometimes use the reverse of the plate causing the manufacturer's impress to appear in the image.

From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility.

A caricature portrait of General Arabin (1750-1828) in uniform with epaulettes, sword, and gorget and a spotted foulard or nightcap on his head. His head is turned, showing a Jewish profile and broad ogling grin. The BM records that Arabin was 'in Angelo's opinion the best amateur actor in the Pic Nics (see BMSat 9916, &c), and outstanding in anecdote, song, and imitation'.

This is said to be an unkind caricature of Miss Sarah Sophia Banks (1744-1818), sister of Sir Joseph Banks the naturalist. If so she wears one of her three riding habits, which she called 'hitem, titem, and scrub', as she enters an inn with her entourage. Sir Joseph donated her collection of prints and coins to the British Museum.

William Henry Cavendish Bentinck as a statue sitting in a chair of Portland Stone blocks, a placard: 'Repaird and Whitewash'd in the Year 1807'. On seeing the statue John Bull exclaims 'I really thought this Statue was gone to decay a long time ago!!'. By the time of this caricature Portland, deaf, gouty, and infirm, was a mere figure-head. This example has Portland coloured as a man rather than the intended statue.

Satire portrait of Sir John Bowing published in volume 4 of 'Fraser's Magazine'. As well as being the 4th governor of Hong Kong, he is regarded as being one the world's greatest hyperpolyglots: he claimed he knew 200 languages and could speak 100. He published works on the poetry of Russia, Poland, Spain, Serbia, Hungary, as well as descriptions of Batavia, Siam and the Philippines. Here he is satirised as the Hawaiian Tydus-pooh-pooh, who is described in the text (on-line) as 'the undisputed monarch of Owyheian literature', but depicted with his compatriots snoozing behind.

Following the breakdown of his marriage in 1773 to Anne Courtenay whom he married in 1764, Boyle struck an arrangement with a courtesan named Miss Greenhill. In an attempt to divorce his wife Boyle accused her of intimacy with a musician however, this was not successful. The marriage was finally dissolved in 1782. Pair of caricatures on one sheet of Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, contrasting his clothing out of office to his Lord Chancellor's robes. When Lord Melbourne became Prime Minister again in April 1835 his dislike of Broughham caused him not to reappoint him as Lord Chancellor.

Hand-coloured etching, image 260 x 180mm. 10¼ x 7". Trimmed to plate. Trace of glue stains, from verso.
Lord Chancellor Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778-1868); wearing barrister's wig and bands, and over this a bodice and petticoat, all topped off with a spotted conical cap tied around his chin. He is likened to a street-seller of brooms, implying venality. By George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878).

A man dressed as a baker holding out a tray of buns. Possibly a representation of one of the Bunbury family (see 14286). Trades interest. From 'Caricatures, Macaronies & Characters, published by MDarly', in an album of caricatures published by Mary Darly dated January 1776. It seems that her husband Matthew made the plates. Numbered 'V.5' upper left and '2' upper right.

Sir Francis Burdett (1770-1844), 5th Baronet, in the dress of the French Republican state messenger, as designed by David and regulated by a complementary law of the Constitution of the Year III (1794-5). He was a supporter of the Radicals and opponent of the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act. One of a set of twelve plates.

Caricature portrait of John Burgoyne (1722-1792), holding out a paper in his right hand as if making a speech and wearing his general's uniform. Burgoyne was a politician and playwright, notable for his service in the Seven Years War and American Revolutionary War. The surrender of his army in 1777 at Saragota was a turning point in the war.

A full-length portrait in profile of Frederick Gerald Byng (1784-1871) who was sometimes referred to as 'Poodle' Byng on account of his curly hair, a feature Dighton captures. Byng was the 5th son of the 5th Viscount Torrington and worked as a clerk in the Foreign Office between 1804-1839.

Portrait of a man standing in profile to left. He wears a bag wife, a long coat with large cuffs, and a frilled shirt. His tongue protrudes. His hat is under his left arm. He holds a walking-stick in his left hand, and in his right a print which appears to represent a fight between boxers in a room. Possible representation of John Canning (1703-1775), the apothecary and Arabist in London. He translated two medieval Arabic texts which were some of the earliest Arabic texts printed in England.
