Queen Victoria and family disembarking at Aberdeen, probably for their first visit to the city in September 1848. A huge crowd awaits the royal arrival. Queen Victoria's visit followed soon after she purchased the nearby castle of Balmoral, sight unseen. After Victoria had it rebuilt between 1853 and 1855. It has continued to be a popular residence with the monarchy ever since.

He exhibited at Newcastle, the Royal Academy, the Suffolk Street Gallery, the Grosvenor and other London galleries.

Lithograph. Printed area 390 x 505mm (15¼ x 19¾"). Framed. Old ink mss. in title area, some spotting. Laid on board, stickers and foxing on reverse.
An extremely rare lithograph of the fishermen, fishwives and their customers gathered around a set of scales in an open-air fish market. All but two of the characters have been named in ink, both with hidden faces. According to the annotation the names were obtained 'from older fishermen in Ayr and revised by Deacon Gowan of the Sailors Incorporation of Ayr 4th June 1890'. One is 'Daddy Auld', probably the owner of the original painting, shown selecting a fish. It is likely this is David Auld (died 1852), the custodian of the Burns monument at Alloway, who lived in Doonbrae Cottage in the gardens of the monument. On the reverse is a photographic copy of 'The Rules of Ayr Poors-House' at its opening in 1756', with a printed list of the 'Committee of Management 1891-2', with the blind stamps of 'Marshall Wane' and 'Edinburgh'. Marshall, a photographer originally from the Isle of Man, had a studio in Ayr as well as Edinburgh.

The owner, William Forbes, a merchant who specialised in Royal Navy contracts, made an objection, forcing the company to built a 696-yard tunnel through Prospect Hill to the west.

[Dryburgh Abbey, Scotland.] 73. [Dryburgh Abbey was founded in 1150 by David I., and quickly became a rich and powerful community. Like Melrose, however, it was several times plundered by invading English troops, and after complete destruction in 1544, it was never rebuilt. The Abbey lands changed hands, and in 1700 belonged to forebears of Sir Walter Scott. Later, however, the Scott family had only the right to "stretch their bones" in the Abbey. The north transept contains the graves of Scott, his wife and family, and his son-in-law and biographer, J.G. Lockhart. Here too is the grave of Earl Haig, the hero of the 1914-1918 war. On the hillside behind the Abbey is a large statue of Wallace, erected by David, Earl of Buchan. The ruins of the Abbey and their lovely surroundings were presented to the nation in 1918 by Lord Glenconner.]

Dunkeld in Scotland, from the "Views in Scotland" series. On the right is the stone bridge over the River Tay built by Thomas Telford in 1809. Although it cannot be proved it is believed that 'I. Clark" is the Scottish painter John Heaviside Clark, famed as 'Waterloo Clark' for his early sketches of the Battle. He was also skilled in aquatinting, and certainly none of this series has a named engraver.
