Letterpress broadside, campaign poster in form of an open letter; issued by the Liberal Party on behalf of their local candidate. Sheet 400 x 235mm, 15¾ x 9¼". Sheet roughly trimmed.
A rallying cry to Liberal supporters in the Coventry, Warwickshire, by Edward Fordham Flower (1805 - 1883). Fordham was an author, who at the age of twelve went with his father to Illinois, USA, but returning in 1824 settled at Stratford-on-Avon, and opened a brewery in 1832. The brewery was so successful that in thirty years he was able to retire and leave the business to his sons. He four times held the office of mayor of Stratford, the last occasion being in 1864, the year of the Shakespeare tercentenary. As a liberal he contested Coventry in 1865, and North Warwickshire in 1868, but was not elected.
He reminds voters of the narrowness of his defeat in the recent contest (by 59 votes), and urges continued support for a future attempt.
Provenance: from a scrap album compiled c.1840 - 1880 by Alfred Towgood of Riverside, a paper mill owner at St. Neots, Huntingdon. He was also a Lieutenant in the Duke of Manchester's Light Horse.

In 1833 Lord Althorp, Chancellor of the Exchequer in Grey's ministry, sought to appoint a Committee of Secrecy to inquire into the question of the renewal of the Bank's Charter, together with a grand enquiry into the 'existing system of banking by Banks of Issue in England and Wales'. The evidence given in this inquiry throws much light on banking history and the policy of the Bank of England: there was a general demand for more public information about the Bank's affairs. Against all precedent, the Report and the evidence leading to it were ordered to be printed; this caused a rapid fall in the price of Bank stock. On 6 August 1832 a specially convened General Court was held, when the accounts which had been rendered to the Secret Committee were submitted to the Proprietors. At a further Court, held on 20 September, the Proprietors expressed their complete confidence in the Directors. In 1833 the Bank Charter was extended, but one clause of the Act extending its Charter was very strongly contested by the Bank. This permitted the establishment of joint-stock banks in London 'and within 65 miles thereof', provided that they were banks of deposit only and did not issue their own notes. The Bank and its legal advisers contended that the clause infringed its existing privilege of exclusive banking, which should, they urged, be interpreted as a prohibition of all joint-stock banks in London and its environs, whether they issued notes or not. Althorp and his advisers were convinced, however, that under existing statutes such non-issuing joint-stock banks were legal and refused to give way. When the Bill passed into law, the prospectus of a London joint-stock bank had already been prepared and was thereupon published: it was that of the London and Westminster Bank.

Between 1861 and 1865 there was a depression in the cotton trade brought about by over production at a time of retracting markets, partly influenced by the American Revolution. Many factories closed in Cheshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire putting hundreds out of work. Local relief charities were set up, by 1864 the market improved but by this stage many workers had emigrated and work in these areas had diversified.

The English who supported the French Revolution during its early stages (or even throughout) were early known as Jacobins. These included the young Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and others prior to their disillusionment with the outbreak of the Reign of Terror. Others, such as William Hazlitt and Thomas Paine, remained idealistic about the Revolution. The conventionalized scrawny, French revolutionary sans-culottes Jacobin, was developed from about 1790 by British satirical artists James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson and George Cruikshank. It was commonly contrasted with the stolid stocky conservative and well-meaning John Bull, dressed like an English country squire.

Letterpress broadside, campaign flyer/handbill in form of an open letter; issued by the Liberal Party on behalf of their local candidate, Henry Wentworth-FitzWilliam. Sheet 225 x 180mm, 9 x 7".
Consisting of a serious of suitably vague pledges on the issues of the day, local and national concerns including the 'Eastern Question', i.e. Russia's policy towards the Ottoman Empire. The Hon. (William) Henry Wentworth-FitzWilliam (1840 - 1920), was a Liberal, and later Liberal Unionist politician. He entered Parliament for Wicklow in 1868, a seat he held until 1874. He later represented the West Riding of Yorkshire South between 1880 and 1885 and Doncaster between 1888 and 1892. Initially a Liberal, he disagreed with William Ewart Gladstone over Irish Home Rule and sat as a Liberal Unionist between 1888 and 1892.

Satirical takes on the issues surrounding the 1868 general election for the City of Exeter, Devon. They are presented in the form of scenes from famous Shakespeare plays adapted to incorporate political figures and campaigning issues of the day. All are from a locally-published 'Shakspere Illustrated' series. The Liberals John Coleridge and Edgar Alfred Bowring were returned for Exeter that year, as part of the general success of the Liberal Party led by William Gladstone, which increased its large majority over Benjamin Disraeli's Conservatives. The 1868 general election was the first after passage of the Reform Act of 1867, which enfranchised many male householders, thus greatly increasing the size of the electorate. It was the first election held in the United Kingdom in which more than a million votes were cast; nearly triple the number of votes were cast compared to the previous election. The Illustrated London News for its November 28th 1868 edition carried 'The General Election: The Nomination at Exeter, For the City'. Some sheets from this series missing.

A banner which reads "But the greatest of these in Charity" is supported by two putti above. After Thomas Stothard (1755 - 1834). The Foundling Hospital was founded in 1739 in London, north of Great Ormond Street and west of Gray's Inn Lane, by the philanthropic sea captain Thomas Coram. It was a children's home established for the 'education and maintenance of exposed and deserted young children.'

There two springs at the village of Hail Weston, a few miles west of St Neots, reputed to have had medicinal qualities. They perhaps derive more fame from the poem by Michael Drayton entitled "The Holy Wells of Hailweston". The Great Northern Railway were keen to promote the springs, and by extension St. Neots as a spa destination, to encourage tourists onto their trains running north from London. These springs were used for medicinal purposes in the 16th and 17th centuries, but later fell into disuse. In 1844, the springs were sold and were then used by the Hail Weston Springs Co., who aerated, bottled and sold the water. In the early 1950s Hail Weston Springs Company was sold by Mr Page to Mr Bath, a local farmer. By 1954 the bottling plant had closed and the two wells were capped off.
