John Bradshaw (bap. 1602-d.1659), lawyer, politician, and regicide. Throughout his career Bradshaw was aligned with more radical elements in English politics, and he was appointed lord president of the high court of justice to try Charles I, and subsequently to chair the high court of justice to try and condemn royalist delinquents. Watercolour by George Perfect Harding (1779/80-1853), miniature painter, probably after an anonymous etching published in 1813. Harding devoted himself to producing minute copies in watercolour of works of historical and antiquarian interest. Examples of his work are in several major British institutions.

Brougham was a radical lawyer and MP who tirelessly campaigned for the advancement of education and reform. In 1810 he entered Parliament as a Whig and immediately promoted legislation against slave trading. He served as Lord Chancellor from 1830 to 1834 and played a leading part in drafting and promoting the Reform Bill of 1832 with Lord Grey. In 1802 he co-founded the Whig periodical the 'Edinburgh Review' with Sydney Smith. He helped establish the London Mechanics Institutes (1824), the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (1826), and the non-denominational University College London (1828).

He retired in 1841, when this portrait was published. He also supported Catholic Emancipation yet prosecuted members of the Catholic Association for sedition.

William Eden (1744 - 1814), 1st Baron Auckland, English statesman; educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, and was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1768. In 1771 he published Principles of Penal Law, and soon became a recognized authority on commercial and economic questions. In 1772 he took up an appointment as an under-Secretary of State. He represented New Woodstock in the parliaments of 1774 and 1780, and Heytesbury in those of 1784 and 1790. In 1776 he became a commissioner on the Board of Trade and Plantations. In 1778 he carried an Act for the improvement of the treatment of prisoners, and accompanied the earl of Carlisle as a commissioner to North America on an unsuccessful mission to settle certain disputes with certain colonists there. On his return in 1779 he published his widely-read Four Letters to the Earl of Carlisle, and in 1780 became Chief Secretary for Ireland. He gained election to the Irish House of Commons as the member for Dungannon and became a member of the Irish Privy Council. While in Ireland he established the National Bank. In 1840 Gov. Hobson selected and named the site of Auckland after him, now the capital of New Zealand. For a short period it was called Bishop's Auckland.

Sir Robert Eyre (1666-1735), solicitor-general (the title by which he is referred on this watercolour), judge, and ultimately as Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. Eyre served as Solicitor-General from 1708 to 1710. In 1710, he was appointed a puisne judge of the Court of Queen's Bench. In 1718, he gave an opinion favouring the view of the prince of Wales rather than that of the king over the education of the prince's children, and was therefore passed over for promotion to be Lord Chief Justice of King's Bench. However, he was appointed Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer in 1723 and then appointed as Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in 1725, a post in which he served until his death. He also served as Member of Parliament for Southampton from 1727 until 1729. Watercolour, probably after a portrait by Jonathan Richardson, by George Perfect Harding (1779/80-1853), miniature painter. Harding devoted himself to producing minute copies in watercolour of works of historical and antiquarian interest. Examples of his work are in several major British institutions.

He took depositions from Titus Oates, later to be revealed as having invented the 'plot' to kill Charles II and his brother James, duke of York, despite being uncertain whether he should have done so. Soon after, Godfrey's body was found lying in a ditch near Primrose Hill in London, with a sword run through him (strangulation marks were also found). A verdict of murder was brought in, and almost inevitably blame was laid on the Catholic community once the revelations about Oates' deposition emerged. This print, with its assertion Godfrey was 'Murthered by Papists', typifies this response, although in fact his murder was never satisfactorily solved.

Charles Hope, Lord Granton (1763-1851), judge. Hope was appointed lord advocate in 1801 and was presented with the freedom of the city of Edinburgh shortly afterwards for his assistance to magistrates in obtaining a bill for the poor of the city. This print was published shortly before Hope was appointed as an ordinary lord of session and lord justice clerk, and given the title of Lord Granton. Hope's distinguished legal career lasted until his retirement from the bench in 1841. When the volunteer movement began during the Napoleonic Wars, Hope enlisted firstly as a private, later being appointed lieutenant-corporal. Fine engraving after a portrait by Henry Raeburn now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The print is one of few published by Pasquale Garof (1774-1808), a carver and gilder born in Como, Italy who established a business in Edinburgh.
