Antonio Mor lo pinto. Bart. Vasq.z lo grabó. 1793.
Stipple. Sheet 360 x 270mm (14¼ x 10½"). Trimmed close to image, mounted in album paper.
A seated woman in mid-16th century Flemish dress, with a lapdog (probably a Cavalier King Charles spaniel) under her right hand, used as a symbol for maritial fidelity. Although the sitter is believed by some to be Metgen Mor, wife of the Flemish painter Antonis Mor (or Antonio Moro), the Museo del Prado describes the original oil of 1565 (P002114) as merely 'Portrait of a Seated Woman'. The plate was engraved by Bartolome Vasquez for the 'Compañía para el grabado de los cuadros de los Reales Palacios', the 'Company for the engraving of the paintings from the Royal Palaces'.
