Peter Hing. Pencil and watercolour. Sheet 205 x 155mm (8 x 6"). A caricature portrait of Philip William May, caricaturist for Punch and The Graphic, outside the Society of Artists. May (1864-1903) played an important role in moving away from Victorian styles of illustration towards the creation of the modern humorous cartoon. He was eminent enough to be a Spy (Leslie Ward) caricature in Vanity Fair.
