Cricket scene from Sir William Nicholson's 'An Almanac of Twelve Sports', which appeared in 1898 with verses by Rudyard Kipling. The work was commissioned by London publisher William Heinemann after Nicholson had been recommended to him by no less an authority than J.A. McNeill Whistler.

Portrait of 25th American president William McKinley (1843-1901) by William Nicholson (1872-1949). The portrait was originally executed as a woodcut for the cover of American periodical 'Harper's Weekly', June 1901. However, after McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist in September 1901, the portrait was reissued as a lithograph priced 2s 6d by Heinemann, a week after the president's death. Cecil John Rhodes born in July 1853 (1853 - 1902) was an imperialist and benefactor who shaped the economic and political development of South Africa and extended British influence into what is now Zimbabwe. From the folio of twelve portraits by William Nicholson published in 1899, although the print was first included in the 'New Review' in 1897, shortly after he appeared before a Parliamentary Inquiry for his role in the overthrow of the Boer government in the Transvaal, which was subsequently vindicated by Parliament. The 'decision to include Rhodes' portrait in the 'New Review' (a journal with strong imperialist sympathies) was probably made at the time of Rhodes' exoneration' (Campbell). Portrait of Lord Frederick Sleigh Roberts (1832 - 1914). Roberts was born in India and served much of his military career there. He rose to Major-General during the Afghan war, 1878-80, and Commander-in-Chief in India, 1885-93. He enjoyed enormous popularity at home, which was much enhanced by his decisive command in the Second Boer War, 1900. He returned to England on being appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British army, 1900-04. From the folio of twelve portraits by William Nicholson published in 1899.
