A plate from 'Cook's Voyage to the Pacific'. A man, head and shoulders facing front and looking towards the viewer, wearing a fur cape and a patterned conical hat with a flattened top, tied under his chin. He has pendants hanging from his ears, with a nose ornament with beaded ends. James Cook entered Prince William Sound in 1778 and named it Sandwich Sound, after his patron the Earl of Sandwich. The editors of Cook's maps changed the name to Prince William Sound, in honor of Prince William, who would later become King William IV. John Webber (1751-93) travelled with Captain Cook on the Third Voyage (1776-80) as the Official Artist of the expedition, recording the explorer's death at the hand of Hawaiian natives.

William Davies (1627-90), a Welsh highwayman holding a man a gunpoint. Aged 64 he was caught and hanged at Salisbury Court (instead of Tyburn, as usual), where he had murdered a butcher, then was hung in chains on Bagshot Heath. Illustration to Captain Charles Johnson's 'General History of the Lives and Adventures of the Most Famous Highwaymen, Murderers, Street-Robbers etc' (1736). The book contains short biographies of both historical and fictitious criminals. It has generally been accepted that Johnson was a pseudonym for another author, although claims that the author was Daniel Defoe have never been proven.

Nicholas Tindal (1687-1774), at one time Chaplain to Greenwich Hospital, first published a translation of Frenchman Paul de Rapin's 'History of England' in 1727, running to thirteen volumes; in 1732 it was enlarged with his own notes and maps. This map was published in 'A summary of Mr Rapin de Thoyras's History of England, and Mr Tindal's Continuation, from the Invasion of Julius Caesar, to the End of the Reign of King George I. A collection of original drawings by Guercino and other Italian masters were acquired by the Earl of Bute while on his Grand Tour, and later given to George III (they remain in the Royal Collection today). The king's librarian, Richard Dalton, met engraver Francesco Bartolozzi in Italy and brought him to London in 1764 to engrave many of these drawings, alongside other engravers including (in this case) Joseph Basire. The plates were later published in two volumes by the Boydells as 'Eighty-two prints, engraved by F. Bartolozzi & c. from the original drawings of Guercino, in the collection of his Majesty'. He is best known for speaking on behalf of the king in the 'Bangorian Controversy', arguing that there was no Biblical justification for any church government, an attack on the bishops sitting in the House of Lords. His portrait was more famously painted by William Hogarth; Hoadly's son Benjamin helped Hogarth on his 'Analysis of Beauty', 1753.

Plan of the encampments of the Franco-Spanish armies and the armies of the British and the Holy Roman Empire during their stand off in Spain at the end of 1711. Nicholas Tindal (1687-1774), at one time Chaplain to Greenwich Hospital, first published a translation of Frenchman Paul de Rapin's 'History of England' in 1727, running to thirteen volumes; in 1732 it was enlarged with his own notes and maps. This map was published in 'A summary of Mr Rapin de Thoyras's History of England, and Mr Tindal's Continuation, from the Invasion of Julius Caesar, to the End of the Reign of King George I. Illustrated With Medals, Plans of Battles, Towns, and Sieges', 1751.

The murderer Thomas Savage (1651/2-68) at the lodgings of the prostitute Hannah Blay, who encouraged the teenaged apprentice to steal from his master. After Savage killed his master's servant, both he and Blay were hanged. Illustration to Captain Charles Johnson's 'General History of the Lives and Adventures of the Most Famous Highwaymen, Murderers, Street-Robbers etc' (1736). The book contains short biographies of both historical and fictitious criminals. It has generally been accepted that Johnson was a pseudonym for another author, although claims that the author was Daniel Defoe have never been proven.

After Benjamin Wilson (1721-88), painter and electrical scientist. A related painting of Savile by Wilson from 1751 is in Temple Newsam House, Leeds. This is a reference to his 'Letter of Sir George Savile, Bart. on an attempt made to interfere with the Aire and Calder Navigation in the year 1772'. He entered the House of Commons for Yorkshire in 1759 and was a liberal. He backed moves to relieve the restriction on Roman Catholics and Protestant dissenters. He also defended the action of the American colonists. After Benjamin Wilson (1721-88), painter and electrical scientist. His son was Sir Uvedale Price, baronet, author of 'Essay on the Picturesque' (1794), parodied by Jane Austen in 'Northanger Abbey'. The engraver is James Basire the elder (1730-1802), Master of William Blake. BM 1880,0807.18: 'probably taken from a drawing book'. Ex Collection of the Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.
