Portrait of James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1766) as a child, when he was Prince of Wales. When his father James II died in 1701 he declared himself king of England, Scotland and Ireland but failed to secure the throne. His eldest son Charles continued to claim the throne, which also failed bitterly.
