Indonesian natives working for the Dutch colonialists. Q. M. R. Ver Huell (1787-1860), a Dutch naval officer, went to the Far East when the Dutch reasserted control over their colonies after the Napoleonic War. In 1817 20 resistance fighters on the island of Haroekoe surrended but were still executed: Ver Huell justified this action as necessary because 'we had to deal with dumb and superstitious people'.
