A plumed helmet sits on a block to right with a tree in the background to right. A battle involving cavalry rages on in the background to left. Butler was an army officer and politician, born Dublin Castle; succeeded his grandfather James Butler as Duke of Ormond. Jacobite, though reconciled to William III and fought at the battle of the Boyne. He was involved in the 1715 rebellion against the Hanoverians and thereafter lived in exile.
