A half-length portrait in oval of James Scott (1649-1685), Duke of Monmouth, wearing long wig and armour. The illegitimate son of Charles II and his mistress, Lucy Walter, Scott was executed after making an unsuccessful attempt to depose his uncle, James II, in the Monmouth Rebellion.
