Half-length portrait of General Sir Charles Colville (1770-1843) in dress uniform. During the Napoleonic Wars he served in the West Indies (1791-7), the Irish Rebellion (1798), Egypt (1801, Martinique (1809), the Peninsular War (1810-1814) and the Waterloo Campaign of 1815. In 1819 he was promoted to lieutenant-general and sent to Bombay as commander-in-chief until 1825. From 1828 to 1833, Colville was Governor of Mauritius during a semi revolt by the inhabitants.
