A half-length portrait in oval of Stringer Lawrence (1697-1775), 'Father of the Indian army'. Lawrence served in Gibraltar and fought in the Battle of Culloden before being placed in command of the East India Company's troops in 1748. He left India in 1759 after being elevated to the rank of Major-General.
