Full length portrait of Sir David Baird (1757-1929), in uniform, standing beside a white horse, right hand pointing. Baird served in India, capturing Pondicherry in 1793 and leading the storming party at Seringapatam in 1799; he served in Egypt in 1801; he commanded the 1805-6 expedition against the Cape of Good Hope with complete success, capturing Cape Town; and during the Peninsular War he was briefly Commander of the British forces, during the Battle of Corunna in 1819, between the death of John Moore and his own wounding.
