Three-quarter portrait of priest and historian William Coxe (1747-1828), dressed in a dark fur-trimmed gown, seated on a chair with one arm resting on a large book and holding a small book in the other. He travelled throughout Europe as a tutor and travelling companion to various grand tourists including Samuel Whitbread and Lord Herbert, son of the Earl of Pembroke. He toured Switzerland with Herbert, after which he published 'Mont Blanc and the Adjacent Alps' in 1789, an early alpinist work.
