From the series 'Views Near London.' Near view of Waterhouse in Islington behind its moat, with two men standing at right seen from behind and water escaping from outflow into ditch in the foreground at left; St Paul's in the background. Etching by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77), Bohemian printmaker who spent most of his career working in England. Hollar's technical skill has ensured that his prints have always been keenly collected, and comprehensive collections of his work are at institutions in London, Berlin and Prague. Hollar's life was changed when he met Thomas Howard, second earl of Arundel, at Cologne in 1636: for eight months he travelled in Arundel's retinue at travelled with him to London, taking lodgings at Arundel House and marrying a servant of the countess of Arundel. This is one of a group of small views from north London sometimes thought to have been issued as a set.
