An illustration to John Gay's poem of the same name which tells the tale of Susan, whose eyes are black from crying. The scene shows Susan standing in a boat heading away from the ship. Gay's poem was set to music by Richard Leveridge and became a popular song amongst sailors. Originally published 1743, this example was issued by Francis West, along with many other Bowles plates. Australian & American interest.
