Portrait of the Wise Woman of Abel-beth-maachah. When Sheba, a Benjaminite leader, revolted against King David, Joab was sent to Abel-beth-maachah, where Sheba was hiding. The wise woman convinced Joab not to destroy the city but persuaded the citizens to kill Sheba and throw his head over the wall. Plate 15 of the series 'Icones Illustrium Feminarum Veteris Testamenti', engraved by Jan Collaert II (c.1561-c.1620) after Maarten de Vos (1532 - 1603). The author of the verse was Cornelis Kiliaan (1528-1607) of Duffel, poet and lexicographer, author of an important Dutch-Latin dictionary, 'Dictionarium Teutonico-Latinum', 1574.
