View of the Ponte Sisto, built by Pope Sixtus IV the foundations of the Pons Aurelius between 1463-9, noted for the circular 'oculus' or eye in the central spandrel designed to diminish pressure on the bridge in case of flood. Behind is the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
The first state, before the plate number, issued unbound. From an early 19th century folder titled 'Roman Engravings. The Property of Major E.G.G. Rugdon[?]'.
