One from a set of six ovals that depict the freshwater fish of England's rivers. Rarely found untrimmed in good condition. Henry Leonidas Rolfe [1823-1881] was devoted to the depiction of angling subjects and was, unsurprisingly, a keen fisherman himself. A portrait of Rolfe on a river bank with his catch is in the Government Art Collection.
