Minerva holds a shield over the head of Archduke Charles of Austria (1771-1847) as he leans on a cannon, a battle waging behind. It is likely to be the Battle of Emmendingen (19th October 1796), in which he defeated the French army of General Jean Moreau and pushed them out of Germany. The original pencil sketch by Peter Edward Ströhling (1768-1826) is in the Albertina (14947).
Ex: Collection of the Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd. The collector's stamp is that of Sir William Augustus Fraser (1826-98), soldier, MP and author.
