Charles Erskine (1716-49), oldest son of Charles Erskine, Lord Tinwald. Educated at Corpus Christi, Cambridge, and at the Middle Temple, he was called to the bar in 1739, joining Lincoln's Inn in 1743. This portrait, showing him aged 31, was probably published during the 1747 election, when he became MP for Ayr Burghs. He died less than two years later, aged only 32.
