A satirical view of China and the influence of European countries on the Chinese in the mid 19th century. European powers had been fighting for control of China since the 1830s. The influence of the West is shown through the european fashion the Chinese figures are wearing, a shop in the background is called 'Marchand de Mode de Paris', and in the foreground a boy sells rats.
