James Compton third earl of Northampton. From an Original Picture at Knole, Kent
[George Perfect Harding, c.1801]
Watercolour and wash, sheet 350 x 230mm 13¾ x 9").
James Compton, third earl of Northampton (1622-81), playwright and translator. Briefly involved in fighting during the Civil War (he fought at Hopton Heath where his father died in 1643, and was routed by Cromwell at Islip in 1645), Compton retired to Oxford and was imprisoned several times during the interregnum. During this time he translated and wrote plays (these were only discovered in manuscript at Castle Ashby in 1978), of which the most accomplished was perhaps an adaptation of Machiavelli's comedy 'La Mandragola'. At the restoration he returned to public life, occupying a number of significant positions in the last twenty years of his life. Watercolour by George Perfect Harding (1779/80-1853), miniature painter. Harding devoted himself to producing minute copies in watercolour of works of historical and antiquarian interest. Examples of his work are in several major British institutions.
